Great Acting, Interesting and Bizarre Episodes, Disappointing Movie

First, this movie is definitely worth seeing because it stars (in my opinion) America's greatest living actor, Robert Duvall and Britain's greatest living actor, John Hurt, as aging patriarchs of dysfunctional families. Billy Bob Thornton's performances and many other cast members were a plus as well.

I also enjoyed the quirky eccentricity of the various characters (not least Duvall's obsession with car wrecks), and found some scenes to be quite memorable, if only for their strangeness.

But somehow, as a movie, the whole thing never really "gelled" for me. I don't require that movies all be plot driven, but a collection of odd episodes usually aren't enough to hold a film together.

You absolutely nailed it. A disjointed, dull, pointless movie in spite of some great performances.

Disagree completely. Billy Bob does a great job of recreating the vibes of 1969 from the Southern point of view. Each of the characters are interesting and the acting is of a high caliber, especially from the A-list stars. It's a quirky picture and there is not the typical three act drama but the understanding of the characters of each other changes as the movie progresses. The dialogue is quite unique. The scene in the woods when Billy Bob relates his war experiences is very moving. It's because of threads like this, filled with the impressions of viewers that have little understanding of the mood of the country during the Vietnam War which causes this picture to be rated so low. This aficionado of Thornton's work had a hunch it was better than advertised which turned out to be the case. This site is relatively worthless regarding ratings.
