Roberto Duran story vs White Savior story

Why can't this be the story of Roberto Duran instead another story of a person of color as seen through the eyes of the "white savior "

reply

Exactly the white savior that saved duran and turned him into a champion . *beep* , he was leech that saw talent and got himself a job that's all .

reply

Get a life. Roberto Duran was of Hispanic ancestry. Last time I checked Hispanics, despite the pc categorizing of today, descend mainly from white Europeans, the Spanish.

reply

Well it sure did seem like it was about the trainer, but then again, the movie isn't called "durans trainer" or w/e his name is. I hope they show more of duran

"Person of color" is invented bull Crap. People forget that many Latin Americans have European origins just like North Americans.

reply

Racism is invented also that doesn't mean it isn't real. The Latin American people are by definition a mixed race people. And it is hard to forget that that Latin Americans are mixed with European. If you look at media in most Latin American countries every news reporter and most actors are white.

You just brought up a known issue without any intention in doing so and I'm sure would also deny that it occurs. People of color have trouble getting equal opportunities in their own damn countries. This is a messed up world. I am not a Christian but whatever the hell people talk about happened from the book of Revelations is well deserved if it occurs.

reply

Agreed with you.Infact, there are more % white peoplein Chile,Argentina than in USA.Heck, now American tos seem think that even Russia,Latvia, Estonia,Ireland are people of colour- i.e White colour.

reply

This is why people of color need to tell their own stories and stop waiting for white people to tell them. Eurocentrism ensures that white filmmakers, such as the ones who made this film, position themselves as the focal point of stories about people of color, often to the exclusion of the other people of color who also played essential roles in the lives of people such as Duran.

The white savior story has been told ad nauseam. Yet, you never see the reverse no matter how many true stories include people of color who have helped whites achieve greatness. The people of color are often effaced from those stories.

Film is a powerful medium for communicating messages - implicit and explicit.

Also, Latin Americans can be white, black, brown, Indian, Asian, and mixed race.

Ding ding ding

Why do 'people of color' expect white people to push their culture? Go out there and tell your own damn stories, no one is stopping you. And if you don't like these kind of films don't spend money on them. I assure you film studios will pay far more attention to that than whining on a message board because they only care about their pocket books.

I agree with you one billion percent on this!!!!!!!! I don't follow boxing, but every boxing movie seems to have to go the "Great White Hope" route! In the end, a white man has to beat the black man!

And, don't any of you other nuts write me back calling me a racist or playing the race card, just because I mentioned something concerning race!!!! Grow up! You are the same sexist hypocrites that complained the women did the Ghost Busters re-hash.

Overall, I think that you just don't want anything to show the white man being beaten of dethroned.

reply

You're assuming that this is a "white savior" story, but Arcel in REAL LIFE probably did a lot to help Roberto Duran. It's not like it would have been easy for a Panamanian street kid to become Welter-Weight Champion of the World without any help from anyone.

The French were essential to America winning the Revolutionary War of 1776, but simply ACKNOWLEDGING this basic truth doesn't diminish the accomplishments of George Washington et. al. That's way history is. Most people that accomplish great things don't do it without a lot support.

I am sure he was essential in helping Roberto Duran become a champion. That is not the problem. The problem is not acknowledging that he was a person before and after his coach was in his life. I know a 2 hour movie you can't fit an entire life, but in the way it was created here, the focus stops being Dura. And becomes the story of the coach.

This would not be a problem if it was an isolated case. In American films it seems like stories of people of color tend to be told "through the eyes of........." And those eyes are usually a white character.

To use your analogy of the French being pivotal in winning the Revolutionary War. That is a true fact, but what if the majority of the films created about the war were always seen through the narration of a French character real or imagined. It limits the real life accomplishments of the American people. This is the problem of main stream American films as relates to the stories of people of color.

reply

But the main character is white though... Or at least played by a white guy.
