The issue is Vronsky

I have seen this twice, tried to give it another chance, and i cannot STAND this actor in this role. It annoys me more than anything, he is very annoying in the character. The chemistry is completely off!

Of course, there are other issues as well, like the odd choice to make this like a play, but I truly think if Vronsky were played by a different actor, this would be slightly more tolerable.

It baffles me because Joe did well casting Keira opposite Matthew Macfadyen in P&P as well as James McAvoy, but this was a total miss.

I thought he did well. I believe jame mcevoy was the directors first choice though. Then again it seems like the director really likes reusing actors and actresses for better and worse.

What specifically dir you not like about the acting? I would say the bigger issue was the role was quite limited as they decided they wanted the veiwer to question his love toward said the end and blur her insanity and reality.

I am a big fan of Aaron, from Savages, but I have to admit he did not do well for Vronsky.
Keira was not good either.
Kitty was great, on the other hand.

reply

Really? I felt their chemistry was on fire! He is absolutely gorgeous and manages to do a good job in every movie convincing you hes madly in love with his female on screen partner. I felt everyone but kitty and that annoying ginger haired lad did well.

agree!

I agree. The biggest problem is that he looked 16. I know he's supposed to be young but he looked so immature next to Keira. The silly moustache didn't help.

reply

I agree.

Keira just squeaks by even though she doesn't look Russian.

But the guy playing Vronsky is all wrong. Vronsky is the epitome of tall, dark and handsome in the novel. The actor playing the role is really dark haired. Why they gave him a dye/perm job is beyond me. Worst thing they did and killed the role to boot.

Agree 100%. I could take the staginess. I could take the skeletonized plot. But that kid is just not Vronsky. Nor do he and Keira Knightly have any chemistry.

reply

Totally agree! The moment I saw him, I said to myself, NO WAY could he have stayed and represented the czarist army officer! The whole thing was sooooo fake; and Johnson just looked ridiculous with that highlighted hair.

I wish Jude Law could have played Vronsky. Ten-twenty years ago he would have been cast as Vronsky not Karenin. He had a boyish, yet mature look when he was just a bit younger. He usually chose the charming yet vile bachelor roles during that part of his career too. The Closer era Jude Law would have effortlessly pulled off Vronsky.
