Hypocrites

Anybody else think these people were extremely hypocritical? First the parents were against their kid's gambling and then when they started making money they were OK with it. They said that they were stealing from the casinos because casinos falsely advertise. Yeah, right... And then they kick out the "non-believer" because God told them he was stealing.

Great documentary but these guys were a little ridiculous IMO.

my gripe with the movie is they say "casinos claim you can win all this money" when really that's what they're doing.

and kicking the non-christian out because God said he was stealing? that's petty.

if you have to smuggle money through airports, you're clearly not doing something that's "christian-like"

reply

They sound more like addictive gambling addicts than christians. thank you you hit the nail on the head

How about the hypocrisy of being a money-grubbing gambler while simultaneously calling yourself a Christian? Talk about irony. Talk about cognitive dissonance. Gambling may not be a sin, but having a vice is.

I'm not surprised they kicked out the non-Christian. It's so very convenient to be able to use God to justify your actions. God tells the leader of the group that the non-believer is stealing, so that justifies their childish behavior.

I wish I was arrogant and delusional enough to use that "logic" in my daily life. I could get away with anything so long as I justify it by saying God inspired my actions.

So convenient; so very, very convenient. For the record, God isn't speaking to you. Those are the voices in your head from your delusion.

These guys have such a holier than thou attitude. As if Christians have a monopoly on being ethical, or being trustworthy. Only Christians could be trusted not to steal from within the group, right? Right. Meanwhile, in reality, there are countless examples of Christians stealing. Thousands of people within corporations, churches; all thieves. Conning in the name of God.

Living your life chasing gold, participating in capitalism to such an extreme, is the complete opposite of everything God stands for. He would be disgusted in your behavior.

This dilemma is covered extensively in this film.

Many Christians and religious people end up doing things that contradict their beliefs. It's not hypocrisy. It's just part of their journey. Eventually, it all falls down into place.

First of all they say that Casinos are bad because they rip people off, they give a false promise that people can win lots of money.

Who goes to a Casino because they think that they are going to win lots of money (other than card counters)? They act like no one has ever heard of house advantage and that the games are rigged so that you will lose. Counting cards is pretty much the same thing as having a house advantage compared to regular play. It doesn't mean that you are always going to win, it means that statistically in 10,000 games you will win 6 games for every five that you lose. I just made that up, but you get the point. In the long run you will come out ahead; in any given game you have the potential to win or to lose.

Now apply that to the average player competing against the house: They might win and they might lose. That is why people go to casinos, because they get to enjoy a fun atmosphere playing games where they might win money. And even better than winning money is risking money, putting it out there knowing that it can be taken away. It feels a little bit wrong, a little bit dangerous. It's exciting, and even though you will feel bad at losing you know that it is worth the price that you paid, otherwise you wouldn't have done it. It's entertainment, not a business transaction otherwise no one would be stupid enough to use it as a means of trying to make money. That's why casinos are not entirely filled with desperate people who need money: Those people don't have any money so they can't gamble with it. Gambling addicts are a different story, but forget them for now. They are filled with people who took time off of work (where they actually made money) and are now spending money on plane tickets, on hotel rooms, on restaurants, on drinks and on shows... and on gambling. They can afford to lose that money and they are willingly paying to do so.

These guys act like they are Robin Hood stealing the money back from the evil casinos, but if that is true where do the casinos get their money? They get it from all the poor people that they ripped off which means that the Christians are just taking the money from those same people. And shouldn't they be giving that money away to charities, perhaps to help gambling addicts, or at least to their church? they are just making themselves rich, which makes them even worse than the evil casinos because they supposedly are righteous people. That's what really makes them hypocrites.

reply

I agree! I was waiting for (even thought I may have missed something) some kind of statement that they contributed a good portion of their winnings to charity. That's supposed to be the Christian philosophy. The fact that they instead kept almost all of it for themselves is horrible. Maybe they did use some for their ministries but it was never really emphasized and that was what I expected this story to be about. I kept waiting for at least one scene where they spent their winnings in some sort of charitable way. But when I instead saw the one jerk opening a safe showing all the cash that apparently just sits there, I just became so pissed I basically lost interest in their story overall.

Total scumbags using their beliefs as a way to fool themselves into thinking they are doing God's work. I cant even see how that makes any sense. They cheat and steal to benefit their on greed. You dont even have to be religious to know those qualities are wrong. All they really did was give Christians a bad name. Period!

reply

Yes they are full of it. At no point do you see them actually helping others. They came up with some lame rationalization about "hating casinos" because they "rip people off" to justify them doing the same thing and pocketing the money. If I could count cards, I would do it too. I just wouldn't go around claiming I was doing God's work in the process.

I laughed when one of these idiots disguised himself as "a Republican". He goes on to say it explains why he has lots of money and is a lousy tipper. He obviously doesn't know much about Republicans. Most of them are just average people who are not stingy in the least. I would wager I am a bigger tipper than any of them plus the money I give to charity comes from hard work.

The logic they used to justify gambling, and their greed, could be applied to anything.

For example, they justify their actions because they were "stealing money from corrupt casinos and using it to support their religion". However, you could make that same argument about selling drugs:

"I sell drugs for a living. I mean, people are going to buy the drugs regardless, this just takes the money out of the hands of the evil drug dealers, and is going to christ now".

These people were the worst kind of hypocrites.

I also loved how they kicked out the only non-christian. I thought a bunch of pastors would have relished the idea of being able to spend a bunch of time with a n athiest, as it would have given them an opportunity to try to convert him.

While it wasn't related to Christianity, that's essentially what Walter White did in Breaking Bad. He inadvertently became a meth kingpin while trying to secure a financial future for his family.

reply

Because you do not see them helping others means that they do not?

reply

Let's not forget about Mormon-run casinos. Mormons are known for being trustworthy business partners. Howard Hughes surrounded himself with Mormons because of that.

But they partake in the gambling business and contribute to fleecing addicts of all their money.

Wow, what a bunch of haters. Me thinks thy should check the mirror if you're looking for "hypocrisy". These facts will fall on deaf, intentionally ignorant, lie worshiping ears, but here goes. #1- Nothing they were doing was illegal. Not the card counting, which casinos don't like but its not against the law. Not the having to hide the stacks of cash at the airport so they don't get hassled, which "looks" suspicious but isn't against the law. #2- Counting cards is not "gambling". Its a game of logic and mathematics, not a game of chance. #3- If you don't believe in God or the bible, you're pretty arrogant and lame to decide on your own who hears from Him and who doesn't, and what He thinks about it all. How would you possibly know?????T here was not one thing these guys were doing that was illegal or contrary to the Word of God. Read it sometime and find out. #4- The reason you didn't see them giving money to "charities" is because this was a business that was supporting them financially so they would have time to plant churches and pastor, versus working a 40 hr work week and then trying to pastor and build churches with the little time and energy that was left. If they were selling Avon instead, would you still have an issue? #5- They kept "stacks" of money in their safes and on their persons because they had to gamble with CASH. They also made mention that they've seen so much of it, it feels like monopoly money to them. Hardly sounds like greedy money lovers to me. #6- As for the parents that changed their minds, and the members that mortgaged their houses to invest, as mentioned, this was a BUSINESS, and a business where investors received a 35% return. As for the dad who changed his mind about it being wrong, gee, he must have discovered he couldn't actually come up with reasons why it was wrong- biblically or otherwise.
If you people weren't so sad and pathetic, you might actually be funny, lol.
Carry on with your hate. No one of importance is bothered or listening. :)

I am not a hater... but a hater of hypocrisy. I didn't have a problem with them winning the money or card counting. The problem I had was them some how trying to justify that what they were doing wasn't really gambling like they were somehow trying to put it up into a pretty little bow say it was only 'card counting'. If you know what you are doing is right why do they wear disguises and hide money. I laughed when one of the guys said that the casinos are hypocrites when they pretend you can win all this money . The casinos are not hiding who they are. As Christians you are supposed to be held to a higher standard by God and because God hold you to that standard you will be judged by it . I am not holier than thou and I do not pretend to be ....but some thing about this makes my skin crawl

LOL I just died laughing when they said that lol . they are judging the casinos just like they do not want to be judged
