Other hand-held camera horror movies?

Good ones, that is.

Have you seen the deliberate 'knock off' of "PA"? Its called "Paranormal Entity" and its quite good.
Flawed of course, and the ending is not that great (neither is "PA"'s actually haha) but I really liked it and still watch it often.

There is also a very good film done somewhat in 'reality' style called
"The Possession of David O'Reilly". That ending really rocks, and that one is even scarier to me.

Paranormal Entity series is like an extremely low budget attempt at cashing in on The PA series. It fails in it's attempts. Now I will nominate a movie that is severely underrated and is actually quite good. It's called "Episode 50" and despite what some say it is decent enough. Unlike the Paranormal Entity series which is the pits. You don't get any lower than the pits as it's the bottom of the barrel.

So it's "Episode 50" and I suppose you could mention "Troll Hunter" as well. It's not exactly horror like PA but it's good.

That is deliberate, Trioxin Zombie. The production company, Asylum Films, that made it does deliberate knock-offs, that's ALL they do. And 99% of their films are actually pretty good.
It fails in it's attempts.

I disagree. I thought it was very good, and had a lot more actual 'activity' than "PA" did!

I actually enjoyed PA Entity, very creepy premise of the Incubus demon tormenting a young woman, the acting was believable and the ending especially was disturbing.

tastybeverage, take a look back a couple of pages. There is a pretty big thread on this topic. I'm sure you'll find lots of suggestions there.

[REC]. Don't bother with the remake Quarantine crap, the originals are scary as *beep* and actually have interesting stories.

Also, you can't go wrong with the original: The Blair Witch Project.

Watch "Grave Encounters", its on Netflix. It starts off as this cheesy, B Horror movie but it develops into this truly scary film. I highly recommend it, I thought it was scarier and better than PA!

I was surprised at how little I enjoyed Quarantine as opposed to [REC]. I saw [REC] first, and thoroughly enjoyed it, despite not really caring for these found footage shows all that much. I think I watch them because I know they CAN be good if done right, but they so rarely are. [REC] was one of those. Good action, good effects, decent acting, just enough hints of more behind the curtain to keep their journey interesting, and the final scene... wow. I found it intensely creepy.

Quarantine, despite being almost shot for shot, was just... not good. It lacked zazz. I think it's partly because they took away the mystery of the infection and turned it into a run of the mill rabies type plague. I liked the hint of supernatural in the original.

Now the sequel to [REC], while still decent enough, was a little hard to swallow (pun intended, if you've seen it). Not a bad idea, but didn't quite measure up.

I dont agree. REC is a great film and the original, but Quarantine as you said is basically shot-for-shot, and not really any worse.

Quarantine might seem pointless, but its a decent enough film in its own right.

Blair Witch Project is the original? What about The Last Broadcast? ...Or Cannibal Holocaust?

reply

Cloverfield, Blair Witch Project, Grave Encounters and Swedish horror film Det Okända. :)

The japanese movie Noroi is really good.

Quarantine. Better than the original [REC] by miles. For once the Americans got a remake right!

Apartment 143.
The ending could be a little stronger, but with the sole exception of "The Possession of David O'Reilly", that describes ALL of this genre so far!

"Episode 50", as another poster mentioned, was quite good but loses some of its juice in the last 10 minutes or so.
But its still very scary, especially given its budget!
