My theory on the Madoka and the anime genre in general

I picked this show at random from a list of available anime shows on netflix. I watched it through and enjoyed it. I'm not an anime fan, but once in awhile I pick something. The last think I watched was a show called Mushi-shi.
Here is my theory on Japanese anime.
It's a lot like a dream. It's very engaging and interesting and makes total sense when you are watching the show. Yeah, it makes total sense only when you are actually watching the show. If you try to explain the show to someone who hasn't watched it, especially someone who doesn't watch anime, it just sounds completely silly and illogical.

So I totally got into this show, enjoyed it, and it made total sense. I wanted to share it with my wife. I am like "Yeah, it's about these girls who make wishes on this pokemon-like alien and they get magic powers to fight witches, which are really these surreal abstract emotional labyrinths which....." I lost her about there.

Yep lol. Kind of depends on the show, but definitely a lot of anime is hard to explain to people, and like you said, if you tried it would just confuse them and probably turn them off. There are other factors but this is definitely a big one.

I think you have to appreciate anime as an art form to go that extra level and like Madoka Magica. Lots of anime are "moe blob" shows which are worthless and give anime a bad name. But shows like Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, Hellsing Ultimate, Madoka Magica, Death Note, Ergo Proxy, Psycho Pass, Shin Sekai Yori and so on elevate the art form. The problem is that the "seinen" genre where most of the good stuff is contained is only about 10% of the content produced in any given season. It's hard to find the good stuff when you're inundated with crap.
