Poor David gets screwed almost every time

Look at this way: Hilary wins no matter what the couple decides!

She and her cohorts get paid on her scaled down renovation project (she can never deliver the full list) and make money no matter the outcome.

David, on the other hand, can only make a commission if they list their home. He can spend hundreds of hours poring over listings, making phone calls, and driving them all over hell's acres, and then they decide to "love it", at least 7 times out of 10.

Hilary has the advantage (if this is really a contest which it isn't) in two crucial areas:
1) It is always easier to stay put than to move.
2) Hilary always uses a major chunk of the reno budget for staging.

She takes a normally unkempt, cluttered home, removes the clutter and beautifully stages the reno areas and presto-bango! the couple is immediately captivated by a living space that will soon resemble their former unkempt cluttered style of living.

Poor David gets screwed.

I do wonder how many of the couples end up selling their house a month or two later when they realize their normal amount of stuff doesn't fit or just isn't liveable.

David can never stay on the given budget, the latest episode, he went over $125, 000budget. And the couple listed Iit.

reply

The reason he can't is because the couples typically want what is completely unrealistic: way more than what they now have for less money that what it would take to get their own property value up to that standard, and in their own neighborhood.

Likewise, Hilary never delivers what they ask for, usually because of structural issues that wipe out a big chunk of the wish list. And sometimes she says up front she can't give them what they want because their budget is unrealistic.

reply

The last two times David won, even though it was a lot over budget. But it was because Hilary couldn't deliver enough because of core problems with the original houses.

There is no way she can deliver on a full list when a couple wants bedrooms, bathrooms, kitchens and basements remodeled. How is she making money by fixing a couples problems???

You think she does this for gratis?

I don't know if she's getting paid...

Again, I ask. Do you think she does this for nothing but the pure joy of it?

Assuming (and this is a big assumption, being a "reality" show and all) the budget is the budget, it does include her fee.

My guess, and this is only a guess, is that everyone gets a slice of the pie for being on the show. Since Hilary and David and Desta and the rest of the gang are on every show, they get a slice every time out. Whether or not she takes this into consideration when deciding what she can do with a given budget, my guess, is "no".

Whatever they're paid to be on the show is what they earn for entertainment value.

Frankly, based on what I see the Property Brothers and the Fixer Uppers do with similar budgets, I think Hilary is overpaid.

I think both of them just get salary from the show. Its entertainment. It seems 80% of the time David loses cause people choose to keep their their homes after seeing all the decorating and new remodeling by Hillary (its like opening a present.) And people tend to wanna stay in neighborhoods that they are familiar with too - unless they are already frustrated with the area and neighbors.

David tend to do a good job finding them an alternative that will give them more space, but they choose not to list it. I think half of them should list it and go for bigger better homes that they obviously need. Although I think Hillary does a good job redesigning, but she tends not no do the whole house, and rarely the front.

I like this show and always watch it. Hillary and David have a good rapport. His sense of humor amuses me, and he makes the show more interesting.

The other "love it or list it" show with younger team of Todd and Jillian isn't as interesting as Hillary and David's, but I watch theirs too sometimes. The younger girl is boring and her design is sometimes monotone. But the Todd guy is interesting to watch like David.
