Totally lying about the value

I'm sorry most of the appraisals of the house are wrong.... I'm watching an episode right now and this town home is priced at 600,000 sorry not buying it.... No pun intended. I live in a brand new 3,000 sq foot home in the Chicago land area and my house is 200,000 less than that and double the space and not a town home.

But, they are in Canada not Chicago and I have learned on these forums there are big differences in housing prices depending on what area of Canada a person lives. Just like we experience in the US.

reply

Oh I didn't know they were in Canada. But still..... Is there economy really that much better than ours?

Not every city or state has the same property values. I remember a house hunters where the lady was going to buy a 5 bedroom house near Houston (where I live) but she was transferred to the Silicon Valley area of Ca. The same money she had to settle for a 2 bedroom town home.

reply

Where I live, $600K will not even buy you a town home. It buys you a 1 bedroom condo, if you are lucky. A 1100 sq ft, 2 bedroom, 1.5 bath, town home will run you about $900K.

Meanwhile, my friend in another state just bought a 5 year old, 5 bedroom house for $300K.

Housing cost definitely varies greatly from one location to another.

reply

No different than homes in California or New York. The mid-west, including Chicago, actually has some of the lowest home prices. We're very lucky.

@lydiadeetz13: Yes, THEIR cost of living/economical wage is MUCH better than where you live (and in most of the U.S. for that matter). The national minimum wage in the U.S. currently is what, about $7 or $8 an hour? The national minimum wage I recently saw listed (and it could have gone up, I don't know, as I don't recall what year the wage I saw posted was) was at $10 average, more in a couple of places, and slightly less in one place, but the national average was showing $10. And since I'm sure most people in Canada are being paid more than that? Yeah, most Canadians are earning a better wage than most Americans.

The term "Chicago land area" says it all. You get more for you money in the burbs than in the city. I'm sure an equivalent property in downtown Chicago would cost a lot more plus Canada did not have the collapse of the housing market the US had due to moderate banking regulations.

Regardless of where you live and where the show is located, I need you to understand that the value of a home in one city can be 100% different in another.

Yes. I don't know how accurate their pricings are but a house in Vancouver is going to be worth a lot more than a house in the burbs of Chicago. Not even comparable.

Most of the shows on HGTV are shot in Canada (Love it or List It, Love it or List It Too, Property Brothers, Buying and Selling, Income Property).

The show is in Canada, not Chicago, genius. I wish people who know nothing about real estate and don't understand cost of living would stay off these boards.

Was that necessary? Are you educated in every aspect of life?

reply

Absolutely not, but I don't make uneducated and false claims regarding those subjects.

Fair enough.

I was taught there is not a stupid question. I think that also applies to the message boards. I watch a variety of shows. Some in my field, some to learn, some trash with friends, ie Real Housewives.

I never debate an issue with a person. It is a waste of both our time. I can't count what great knowledge and insights I have gain from the message boards. I have an open mind and my opinion has been changed on important issues. There are rules that have to be followed when using this service, but I have yet to see the rule that say a poster has to be educated about the subject at hand. The service is open to anyone as long as they follow the guidelines.

One does not have to understand RE or COL to post here but one should not be rude or hurtful. As one should be all the time. I enjoy reading posts and discussing a show with other people that have watched it. If there is a post I don't like, I go to another one. I they are rude or cussing, I report them.

This is the US and we all enjoy freedom of speech. I found the above post uncalled for and in bad taste. I learn something everyday. I make mistakes as well. I don't own this services, nor does the poster who wished uneducated people not post here. But I had to say something about this post.
