S3 - A.N.T. Farm's Final Season

No official word from Disney, but this post/Tweet more or less confirms it:

http://www.disneydreaming.com/2013/05/18/ant-farm-wraps-filming-on-its -final-season-with-roshon-fegan/

It looks like they are going to use the remaining 10 episodes to build a Friday night block aimed specifically at younger (non-teen & family) viewers:

8:00pm - A.N.T. Farm
8:30pm - Dog with a Blog
9:00pm - Wander Over Yonder / Fish Hooks

The overall strategy seems to be to give DWAB a boost with good lead-ins since it has been consistently last in the ratings for this batch of Disney shows.

Well that was from way back in May, but yeah. I think it'll be the last.

Well, it was a pretty good run.

Not saying that the rule still exists, but this is the first Disney Channel Original Series to halt production after 65 episodes since Lizzie Mcguire (?). (26 episodes were produced for Season 1, 21 for Season 2, 18 for Season 3)... just a random fact, haha.

I thought it was pretty obvious that this is going to be the last season. The show's popularity was never equivalent to That's So Raven's, Hannah Montana's, WOWP's, or GLC's, which all got fourth seasons (same with P&F and Kim Possible).

You're right. I didn't notice the date, but this should have been a clear sign three months ago this show was (is) ending.

RE: 65 Episode Rule & Popularity...

Yeah, it's pretty obvious this show never really gained the following they hoped it would.

We discussed this before about how they tried to cram China down viewers throats and promote her as the next Miley Cyrus, and people were just sick of that kind of blatant promotion on the heels of the music-era shows and movies.

The sad part is those who did not stick around past the initial episodes missed what I consider a genuinely funny show in my opinion.

I like how ANT Farm was so over the top, yet the producers never once apologized for it. I wish more sitcoms, broadcast and cable, were this creative because then I might watch broadcast TV again.

Instead, we get quirky characters who aren't that funny, just odd, grounded in boring reality and settings like the workplace, home, etc. This show reminds me of shows from the '80s like "Night Court" and "Newhart". These shows mad me LOL until it hurt and that's because they weren't trying to be ironic, or cynical. I know trends change, but modern TV shows just aren't funny to me.

Damn, I take a couple days off from IMDb and come back to see this. I guess I was wrong. It was a good run. Putting DWAB on Fridays make sense. I read on something on the S+C board about Nick screwed themselves by having Victorious and Marvin Marvin as those two didn't mesh well and people turned the channel after Victorious went off. S+C and HH meshes better as evidenced by similar ratings, someone said. And I agree. Fridays and Saturdays are tough nights of the week, and there is even a trope called Friday Night Death SLot. Over recent years DC took advantage of the Death Slot and put shows there as a way of taking away the pressure. Shows on Friday nights can get away with numbers that won't fly on other days. If DWAB doesn't do any better, it probably will be just as safe as it was before (which probably wasn't very) but they can atleast cry that it's tough on Firdays than Sundays. If it increases after the move, then they make the right call. It still might have the lowest Disney ratings, while not having bad numbers.

DWAB can use some help from another show with the same target demo. WHile it's consistently last place on Disney, it beats Nick shows, even Sam and Cat on occasion. It's being the worst person on an All-star team. The best Nick show is getting its butt kicked by some of DC's "worse shows".

If you look at this schedule...

http://www.nickandmore.com/2013/08/16/disney-channel-september-2013-pr eschool-block-cutdown-dog-with-a-blog-moves-to-fridays/

...It's clear Disney is putting their best shows on Sunday night and this will probably include GMW and IDD when they finally premiere sometime next year. Sunday is also geared toward teens & families judging by the types of shows alone.

The only show missing from the lineup is Jessie. It has officially been renewed for S3, so my guess is they will use this as a "pinch hitter" and insert it when and wherever other shows (new/old) might need a boost. It's the only show that has no predictable weekly ratings pattern since it fluctuates wildly. It's unpredictability is the only thing predictable about it.

@ferrisb1-1

I seconded Ant Farm S1 and S2. Its tooo bad that once I heard about the new setting for S3 that I abandon it. I felt it was a mistake to lose a good amount of the cast for no real reaason. And now I'm really sorry because...well its just too bad.

While AF did not make me laugh as much as Night Court, I get what you're saying. It reminded me lot of Family Matters and Boy Meets World in some ways. Never reaching the tone and popularity of those shows, but always had the potential.

AF S1 AND S2 was decent/good but the last special with China touring with her sisters grated my nerves. I wanted more of the B-plot and felt that was the true strength of the special. Oh well.

AF made some good hits and misses. It was a decent run and I rather see it go out on top, forget that I rather remember the good of S1 and S2 and forget this season altogether.

When you do a show with kid actors - you are LUCKY to get three seasons out of it - between them growing up and puberty, etc. that is pretty much a regular run. ANT FARM was too quirky and unique for the somewhat bland Disney line up (aside form their quirky cartoons - Phineas/Ferb and Gravity Falls). But as others have said on other posts - to its credit - AF was like a live action cartoon and THAT'S why my kids LOVE it. They will cherish these three seasons and watch them over and over. In fact, they had a sleepover recently and all they did was watch Ant Farms and laugh!

reply

I also think the schedule change is very strategic. DWAB and AF are similarily wacky, and DWAB should inherit some of its viewers. Liv and Maddie should inherit GLC's (technically it seems it will get SIU fans, which it should due the premiere and end of the two, but L&M seems like more of a family show than GMW or SIU). GMW will get the SIU fans, while its much more of a family show than ANT Farm, it will probably be more centered around the friendship of Riley and Maya, similar to SIU with Rocky and CeCe. While either of the two new shows can go either way, and logically L&M should try to inherit SIU's fandom, why waste a decent family cast. Which sadly might happen to GMW if they focus too much on the buddy aspect. That said, both might do both, or GMW makes the old fandom happy, then L&M will replace SIU and not GLC. That's why I think GMW will be more like SIU than GLC. The target demo.

I agree with pretty much everything stated above my post, which is hard on this site. But especially the last post. It's very hard to for any show to last 3 seasons and its exponentially tougher for kid shows. DWAB and AF should feel very grateful. DWAB's big task is to make it to S3. And it was a good run for AF. And the actors themselves should've feel bad. S3 is like living on borrowed time. They took some risks, they didn't pay off, but the show probably could've still ended if the fans loved the reboot. That's showbiz.

And through all of this, Jessie is probably gonna last the longest of everything currently on. Of all the bleepin shows. SMH. I don't hate it, but it's not consistently funny. They're just lucky they have one of the hottest actresses as the lead.

If you are right OP, I hope it's true. The show was just a disaster in the making, the concept was boring and getting China as the main character was the problem.

She's okay, but the failure was Disney thinking they can have her carry the show. She needs a lot more acting experience, if Disney wants to keep her, then she should focus on her music because that's were talent lies. If she wants to work on another Disney show that's fine, but they shouldn't make her the lead again.

reply

I don't think China was carrying the show, at least not alone. She was surrounded by talented co-stars. I'd say some of them were more talented,IMO.

This feels like 2007/2008 all over again! I hope the new shows are as good as the last. Next year Disney's spring cleaning for a new generation goes into full effect.

reply

I can't say I'll miss ANT Farm. I'm gonna miss SIU though. :-( Also Jessie and A&A when they end. We have no idea what will happen after season 3, but Disney seems to be changing the way they do things so we may be out of luck.

I had a feeling AF was cancelled after I saw Bradley Steven Perry, Who's Show GLC has been cancelled, and, AF's Jake Short, promoting a new Disney Series They'll be starring in. I wonder about Stefanie Scott? She's much too pretty to fade away from sight.

Good Luck Charlie wasn't cancelled, it finished its natural life

And who knows how good Mighty Med will be. It looks funny and seems to have some potential, but since it's airing already, Jake probably shot those episodes after AF shot S3. So they can both run at least for a little while, and while Fletcher is a major part of the show, I think it can last without him. And knowing how wacky the writers handle most things, they'll probably do it close to the end but in a silly way.

I honestly think Lexi leaving would hurt the show more than anybody else leaving would. Why else bring her to Z Tech? And while she's a pretty face that can sing, she can be pretty funny sometimes. If it ends soon, I'd expect to see her on either another current Disney show in a recurring role, getting her own show on Disney or Nick, making the leap to ABCFamily, or doing movies. Not sure how great any of them would be, but she'll definitely get the opportunities. Sierra McCormick also should have a bright future in Hollywood. On a slightly different note, I would what will happen to Tinka, I know this isn't the SIU forum, but just wondering.

I agree. I doubt many would even care if China left.

At this point, I doubt it really matters. Her interaction with Cameron, Paisley, and Skidmore was more funny than anything she done since the school change.

I'd go on record and say no one at this point would be missed.

Sierra McCormick is very similar to Amy Poehler as a comedienne & actress, IMO. Not just because they are both blonde, but Sierra has the same zeal and energy Amy Poehler has and seems willing to go over the top when needed.

Steffanie Scott is cute, but not drop dead gorgeous... Regardless of what Lexi tells us She could have a bright future behind-the-camera doing voice work because her voice is the most distinctive thing about her when all is said and done e.g. "You gotta be kidding me!"

Caroline Sunshine is the most grown up of all of them and could easily transition to more adult and dramatic roles if she wanted. She has a sultry voice and doesn't look like a kid (she looks like she is in her early 20s; that's a good thing for not being typecast as a teen and more mature roles).

We know Olivia Holt will be in IDDI, so she is going to be with Disney for at least a few more years.

Wow, talk about your battle of the Disney blondes...

I'm actually surprised we haven't heard anything on ANT Farm's status yet. I figure they would've announced it long ago if they were renewing it, but I still figured we'd hear something by now either way.

"Weird is just a side effect of being awesome."

reply

I have no evidence to confirm this, but...

My theory is Disney knew they screwed up with the reboot, so now they just want the show to go away quietly, perhaps?

It's fairly obvious the show is over. Not just because of the Twitter announcement at the start of this thread, but the fact Jake Short is now officially on another show. When one of the leads is doing another show that's a pretty solid indicator the former show they were on is over even if the network hasn't confirmed it yet.

reply

I believe this has come up before on other threads but three seasons - over 75 episodes is a successful run on Disney - that's like a 5 year run on a regular network with adult actors. Kid actors grow out of their parts - especially when they start out on it 11 or 12 years old - things (and bodies) change - you outgrow the concept. My kids loved Ant Farm and we'll buy the boxed set but now my son is obsessed with Mighty Med, so new shows will always come along....

reply

If the show itself is successful, they will keep producing it no matter how old the kids are. Look at Bridgit Mendler who will be 21, and was still on GLC.

The ratings for ANT Farm have been consistently in the middle of the pack, but outside that the reception to the boarding school and everything else in S3 has been mostly negative. You can also tell the quality... as subjective as that may be... Of the series has declined from the early seasons, too.

It was never a great show, but it managed to rise above trying to be a HM clone and be funny in its own right, but that wasn't enough for casual viewers who gave up on this show part way through season two. Plus, the core concept was so limiting from the start I'm amazed the show lasted this long all things considered.

reply

If the show itself is successful, they will keep producing it
I don't fully agree with this. If Disney wants to end a show, they will regardless of how successful it is.

reply

I'm not talking about SIU, or GLC.

I am talking about how the age of the actors doesn't matter anymore like it used to back in the day. Ahsley Tisdale was 26 when she made the Sharpay Evans movie! To say that the shelf life of kids shows & properties is limited by the age of the actors does not hold true anymore as evidenced by Bridgit Mendler, Ahsley Tisdale and others who perform kids entertainment well into their 20s and beyond.

ANT Farm pretty much is the redheaded stepchild of DC's programming lineup at this point, though I'm not certain if they're going to try to burn off its remaining episodes this year (at a minimum, I think it has nine eps left) or push the last few into next year as with Good Luck Charlie. It may depend on which show they've earmarked to replace it; since Friday seems to be DC's "wackier" night of original shows, I'm honestly not sure if they're going to skew the other way (either Girl Meets World or I Didn't Do It will be the next show up, it appears) or just finally drop the announced revamp of Win, Lose or Draw in its timeslot.

Were the ratings that bad? I do wonder why DC went so cold on Ant Farm.I know 65 or so episodes used to be the standard but many of their recent shows have gone beyond that. Season 3 was a misfire but that could be blamed on switching the premise of the show too quickly and not well (losing Paisely and Cameron as the not so smart foils along with replacing Principal Skidmore with Zoltan didn't work). I think China and Sierra (and Jake Short who already has a new show) could be long-term assets to Disney so its weird for them to cut tail so quickly when something like a Suite Life got multiple seasons and a spinoff.
