One woman's opinion

Atrocious. This is basically “Hee Haw” for Arabs. And that’s an insult to “Hee Haw.” This movie, which takes place at some fictional city in the rural Lebanese countryside, is about the sudden rivalry and fighting between heretofore “peaceful” Muslim and Christian Arabs in a town. The men suddenly hate each other and are at war, but the women all get along and bake marijuana into the baked goods and spend their money to bring Ukrainian strippers to perform for their husbands, in order to make everything better like it once was. Sound stupid? Believe me, I’m making it sound better than it is. It’s far worse. This long, boring, pointless, horrible, never-ending movie tries to be a million things–comedy, musical, drama, romance, etc.–and fails miserably at each one. The “humor” is so backward and dated to several decades ago, it’s just annoying. Even the late Rodney King’s “Can’t We All Just Get Along?” BS is an improvement on this waste-of-time fraud of a movie. More proof that the Arab world is inept at film-making.

(wikipedia) Debbie Schlussel (born April 9, 1969) is an American attorney, film critic, political commentator, and a conservative blogger who focuses particularly on Islam and American Muslims. Her writing frequently targets the largely Muslim population of the Detroit suburb of Dearborn, which she refers to as "Dearbornistan".[1] Her columns are often provocative and controversial, specifically those detailing what she considers the unsavory elements of Islam, the objectionable activities of American Muslims, illegal immigrants, as well as liberal and “faux-conservative” politicians.

Odd that your hatred of Muslims leads you to smash a film produced by a Christian. Blind hatred has never led to anything productive. I think that Nadine Labaki did a terrific job on this film and with Caramel as well.

I saw this last night, I thought it was reminiscent of Jean Pierre Jeunet's 'Amelie' in it's romance and humour as well as it's portrayal of 'human' quirks. I loved the film, especially considering I have had great Lebanese friends here in Australia whose families are at times so similar to what this movie portrayed. The strength and humility of the women who are very often the backbone on the 'manly' men is nothing short of inspirational!

"More" proof? What other "Arab world" movies do you find so awful?

That's my new favorite camel.

Debbie Schlussel is a "wack-packer" on the Howard Stern Show. She's an Ann Coulter wannabe, but won't ever hold a candle to Coulter because she's actually stupider than Coulter... which is saying a lot. On the Howard Stern Show she gets ridiculed and laughed at (as she rightly should be) for her stupidity and wannabe annoyingness (she'd be as annoying as Coulter if she could only attain a greater level of A-hole-ness, but instead Debbie falls into mere silliness). Her post here is just another stupid right-wing attack on Arabs, and not a credible film review. Debbie, we miss you on the show; you haven't called in in a while. Call Howard and he'll tell you what you need to hear. ;-) Meanwhile, leave the IMDb message boards to serious reviewers of cinema, especially foreign films, you xenophobe. (BTW, i haven't seen this movie, but Netflix just got it, so i'm having it sent to me tomorrow; i saw a trailer for it and that immediately recommended it to me. And i've never seen a movie from Lebanon...this one sounds like a good one!)

Wow !!!!
This movie is much more subtle than your simplistic description.

Maybe we have here a great irony...... !

Your lack of respect for the storyline could easily , in a tense environment , lead to an agressive confrontation.....

I'm an Arab and a Muslim and I completely agree with this post. The film was simply an embarrassment. It was just painful for me to watch, for how terrible it is. This idolized world that Nadine Labaki created is never gonna exist in reality, and even if it was possible, the story telling in the film was so immature and it's beyond me how anyone would take it seriously.

Now Debbie Schlussel might end up being an ignorant racist *beep* but that won't make the movie any better.

Habibi! My dear friends, pleeze, let's not get so egzited! It's just a movie. For me, it was refreshing to see the religious leaders getting along and actually co-operating to promote peace. This film had some problems. The young boy who died may have been accidentally killed by his own tribe in the cross fire. (I am dependent on English sub-title translations.) The young kids and Ukrainians seemed to mysteriously disappear and re-appear. This may have been an editing issue. Finally, it is comedy, which often comes out of pain and tragedy. That town could have been where my ancestors originated a century ago. It was not the worst film but I would have to give it 6 out of 10. A good effort on a very difficult subject.

Good that there are many other women´s opinion in imdb and in the world. Finally it´s not that you are a lady or a gentleman. Sadly your opinions are horrible, and you are what you think!

One of the best film I ever saw to the point of owning it.
