Is Paul an actual Angel? (spoilers)

I've been wondering if Paul is (or was?) an actual angel come to earth to fix ascension. He has actual wings. Sure, they only seem to appear when he is in the throes of bliss or dire need, but then he is supposed to appear as a regular human being to everyone else so I can undestand why they're hidden. Paul's belief that killing is wrong - even killing already-dead-alive-again-murderers - also strikes me as a rather 'angelic' viewpoint. His rather spectacular and specific abilities certainly suggest that he was sent from above to fix the problem. He even came back from the dead like so many saviors of humanity seem to be required to do.

SPOILERS

If he is an actual angel come to earth to fix ascension, then why didn't it work? To clarify, why didn't it work completely and as planned?

Is whoever running heaven not happy about the sudden influx of damaged (and a few very evil) souls? Did Paul make a mistake? Was he supposed to kill John and all the other reborn fades BEFORE reopening ascension?

If Paul was an angel born into a human body (with a memory wipe of what he actually is to boot) sent to earth to fix ascension, how much of a bummer would it be to mess up and not do the job right (ominous clouds and coloring at the end, ambigous destination of the birds that John turned into, etc.)? Or a worse bummer, do everything he was supposed to do yet whoever's calling the shots is still not happy? Since we didn't know WHY ascension points closed in the first place, I guess we wouldn't know why opening them again might not have been the intended plan.

I hope there is a second season to answer some of these questions. I really enjoyed the show and hope it comes back.

Well all angelics have supernatural powers but Paul, the most innocent and moral, is the most powerful.I don't think that is because hes an actual angel but because of those aforementioned attributes. In the show I remember Neil telling Paul that there was no God or Heaven (I can't remember which one,its been awhile) when Paul asked about the afterlife.

Neil also warned Paul not to try and use his powers to tamper with ascension because it could have undesired consequences. Why is tampering with ascension so dangerous.Don't really know, you can only theorize.Maybe only worthy or human souls can use ascension but some evil force within our universe, that exist alongside the good, was able to crossover and infect ascension when tampered with because Paul made some accidental opening.

Or maybe he made a play to bring back Jay by manipulating ascension,he screwed everything up since the fabric of ascension is so sensitive and what he was trying to do was unnatural.Bring Jay back, in human form, and not through the process The Fades used, which was unnatural but it didn't affect ascension.

Maybe he created some new kind of evil when he messed with ascension.Ascension seems like a gateway to whatever made out of energy. What kind of energy is unknown at this point. But mixing his power, with the forces of ascension might have created a new energy. An evil one.

Guess we'll find out with the second series!!!!

The monster you feared did not exist until you created it.

BBC have this on as a repeat, and I've just watched it for the first time. Perhaps they are going to follow it with a season two now - hope so, but doubt it. Anyway, I have pretty much the same questions as you do, except for the birds. I don't think that John and the rest were turned into those birds. When the female priest ascended, we were shown that when a soul ascends, birds materialise on Earth. It's not explained, just like it isn't explained why the birds were dropping dead around the fades that couldn't ascend. Come to that, no explanation about the moths and butterflies, either.
