Was It About Money?

Is that what they're trying to say here?

That's how I took it... He wasn't making rent and his account had overdrafted. It seems like he only meant to rob the girls he met online, not kill them. He shot Julissa Brissman, however, because unlike the first victim she fought back and he panicked.

Not even the filmmakers are sure, it seems. How, then, to explain why Markoff kept 16 pairs of panties as souvenirs? We'll never know, huh.

reply

Good point. He WAS, apparently, a bit of a sexual deviant- Maybe the panties were just a bit of icing on the cake. Like you said, we'll never know.

Just interesting because I always thought it was about the deviant part yet he's gambling all the time, overdrawing his account, not paying the rent, it seems odd that the primary motivator would something so benign as money.

Motive and other aspects of the case probably would've been more fleshed out if the case had gone to trial, but as it was, Markoff killed himself before anyone got to find out his true motivation. I think this movie reflected that; it showed his dysfunctional family, his gambling problem, etc. We will never know why he did it.
