I wasn't expecting much from this movie

But I like it a lot. It's not great, but the dialogue was funny and Pacino, as usual, was wonderful...except for the singing parts...ou-ouch.

Pacino made the movie watchable... I rate it a 7.5, mostly because of him.

reply

I wish 7.5 was an option for us to cast a vote.

This movie was nowhere near an 8 for me but I thought it was better than a 7. Generally, when that happens, I'll vote based on where it currently sits. It was a 7.1 when I went to vote so I gave it an 8. Had it been a 7.8, I'd have given it a 7. It'd be nice if they made 1/2 votes an option.

reply

I agree... and I do the same thing.

Al is still the finest actor ever, I'd give the film a 3 outta 5 and the ending was just terrific

reply

I really enjoyed it. The interplay between Pacino and Plummer, and then Pacino and Benning, was excellent. Three veterans at the top of their game.

I swear that Plummer gets more movie parts now than he did when he was younger. He seems to be in everything.

That is exactly how it was supposed to make you react. Danny Collins has long passed his prime, his singing is only a shadow of what it used to be and he knows it. But that is what happens in real life, old singers still perform at places like Branson and old fans still smile and cheer, even though they are only a shadow of what they were 40 or 50 years earlier. But it keeps the money flowing to pay the bills.

If his singing was "only a shadow of what it used to be," I wish the filmmakers had provided some evidence that it used to be good. I didn't hear it here.

reply

Why does his singing "have to be good" for him to be who he was? There's never an argument made by the film that he's a great singer just that he's a big star. I really don't get the people saying "except for his singing" - it's kinda meaningless, the film isn't a musical after all?

reply

I agree. I don't think the movie indicated that Danny was supposed to be a great singer. So I wasn't bothered by Al's singing.

As for the film itself I saw it in the theater when it came out and liked it. I just rewatched it the other day and still liked it. Is it a great film? No. But is it good with some nice performances? Yes. I also like that for the most part Al's acting isn't as over the top as it sometimes gets. The movie has some comedic moments but I think overall it is still more of a drama.
