There is NO dark side of the Moon.

Well, there is, but its not permanently dark there. Darkness last for a maximum period of one month.

Heres a quote from the films beginning: "Its hard to believe that Sun never shines at some of these places... Ever"

Far side of the Moon and dark side of the Moon are completely two different things.

reply

I believe they were talking about some of the craters, but I wasn't really paying attention.

God this movie was boring.

reply

Yup. Intensely boring.

reply

incredibly.

reply

It wasn't boring for me. In fact I felt like the authentic feel of the moon mission made it more interesting than boring. I was genuinely intrigued even in the "routine" parts of the mission.

reply

Ya, I liked that aspect too. Not boring at all.
Doesn't always have to be Avengers-eque to be entertaining.

reply

they were talking of the creaters, the sun never reaches the bottom of some of them.

reply

Yup... and there have been attempts to have lunar probes try to detect water in these permanently shadowed areas - theory is that ice-laden comets could impact the surface of the moon. Most would simply "boil off" into space under the gaze of the Sun, but some errant chunks might be sequestered in the dark parts of the craters.

"...and Mrs. Taylor sure seems to use a lotta ice, whenever he's away."

reply

Yes, they were definitely talking about the craters. There are craters at the poles of the moon that are never illuminated by the sun. The Shackleton and Cabeus Craters are examples. It's mentioned in the film that the astronauts are landing near the south pole of the Moon.

The term "dark side of the moon" is only a poetic reference. So there, Mr. Wizard. :P

Jeez! It took 9 days for someone to come back with the Pink Floyd quote. That's the first thing that popped in my head when I read the subject line.

reply

I posted the pink floyd quote as soon as I came to the board. - Jon

"There is no dark side of the moon, really. Matter of fact, it's all dark."

>Darkness last for a maximum period of one month.

No. You're getting "half rotation" confused with "full rotation." The Moon makes 1 complete rotation in about 1 month. Half of the time (approx. 2 weeks) it is "day" and the other half it is "night."

reply

As the others have mentioned, they were talking about the craters but even then, I didn’t understand the significance… There are places on Earth you can walk right into where the Sun never shines. Caves? Hell, there are places everywhere that the Sun never shines on.

reply

"Its hard to believe that Sun never shines at some of these places... Ever"

And that's a FACT. The 'dark-side' of the moon has-never, and will-never see sunlight, EVER.

Sure, it keeps moving... but it'll never see sunlight :D

reply

there is no SPOON...

reply

Are you referring to the side of the Moon we don't ever see? If so, the Sun does, in FACT shine on that side. When there's an eclipse the far side of the Moon is facing the Sun and the side we see is the proverbial dark side of the moon.

This will be the high point of my day; it's all downhill from here.
