What were these flash things ?

They use these flash things in the crater. They seem really bright but only light the place up for like half a second. It seemed very ineffective to me. Why didn't they use their flashlights ?

I think those were cameras. They were using the flash bulb to see.

Why they didn't have flashights, who knows.

The Apollo suits may not have had built-in "head lights" as they were only intended for short exploratory EVAs (not the kind of "space work" performed by space shuttle astronauts) and the nearside surface of the moon is well illuminated by sunlight.

The suit did have a "penlight torch pocket" so perhaps the batteries required for a head torch back in the 1960s were too large/bulky for one to be included.

They were never meant to poke around in the craters so maybe that's why they weren't equipped with flashlights although I don't know how realistic that was for Apollo missions.

Maybe they didn't have flashlights back in 1850's. But yeah, it was one of the sillier moments of this movie. Never explained. It kind of worked regardless.
