Republic of China is Democatic

learn your history morons.

reply

You mean Taiwan?

Sure it is, but back in the early days it wasn't.

reply

Taiwan is all that is left of the Republic of China and it's democratic but there is a low tolerance on dissent.

Also, the Republic of China under Chang Kai Shek was a banana style republic. Shek was a dictator.

reply

but there is a low tolerance on dissent

Much like the PRC.

Mao was very much a dictator like Chiang.

Both Mao and Chiang were more or less the same despite being the different side of the same coin. That's all there's to it, simply speaking.

Roycant07, what Cocainefarm meant was that until 1980s, the ROC was a one-party state just like mainland China...

To call it "democratic (but low tolerance on dissent)" before then is bordering on western propaganda-- you know, just like how the "books/accounts" kept by the west don't really reflect the tanking economy.

If you care enough to go around telling people you don't care... you obviously care.

reply

Democratic since Chiang Kai Shek's death.

Of course, living standards are indeed considerably much higher than that of its People's Republic of China counterpart.

Why are you bringing this up? What is the point of this?

The Republic of China in my opinion though was worse than Maoist China, but that is not saying anything to Mao's credit.

The Republic of China had rampant famines every year, Mao only had one major one his whole reign.

Reading Mao's journals, before he became a dictator, the cities were plagued with slumlords, warlords, and a huge portion of the population (including kids) were addicted to opium.

The rural countryside was a horrid place of mass disease and grinding poverty.

Mao's China at least reversed most, not all, but most of the worst elements of Chiang's Republic. Of course, he then ruled China with an iron fist so that part makes Mao's China a mixed bag.

reply

I'm guessing roycan't07 is from mainland China, because Mao's *beep* level to his own people is pretty much on Stalin's level.

reply

I hate people who try to change history, you can not deny the fact China under mao was incredibly backwards. Millions died under his atrocious rule.

Meanwhile in Taiwan it prospered and flourished rather quickly! China has reached the level of advancement that Taiwan had started in the 1960s! so yeah 2011 China is only equivalent to 1960 Taiwan, China still has a lot of catching up to do.

im dying of laughter here. you are so deluded its unbelievable. at a time when china is sending man to space, building infrastructure like crazy, lifting millions more out of poverty every year, dont even try to talk down china's achievements.

reply

at a time when china is sending man to space,
================================================================================
Sending a man into space has little to nothing to do with a country's politics or anything else - only technology.

Do note that China's space program wouldn't have even existed had it not been for the Soviets, who practically introduced the technology to them before relations soured off.

================================================================================
lifting millions more out of poverty every year
================================================================================
That doesn't change the fact that many people in China are still poor (especially in the rural areas), yet alone even comparable to the average Taiwanese standard-of-living.

================================================================================
China's more notable achievements didn't come about until the late 1970s, which by then Mao had already popped his clogs.

To make his statement more accurate, 2011 China's economic growth development since the late 70s is equivalent to Taiwan's economic growth development during the 60s to the 80s (and possibly, the 90s).

China's government all over is moving back towards Nationalism, which was inspired by the US. Don't let the MAO days assume China is communist still and most of the negativity was propaganda so we'd hate china back in he day, while some true. - The point is they didn't have a choice and needed Communist aid, and then aided the communists in the Korean War.

China has the fastest growing economy in history, 2 years ago TIME said 2014 China would surpass the US, its much faster than that.

If its not Jackie Chan; Its most likely not interesting.

reply

Where would mainland China be today without Taiwan and Hong Kong investment and management skills? Without all the technology they steal from western countries they would still be starving in hovels.

The Chinese communist leaders will be like the Russian oligarchs that Putin has targeted. They and their children will be corrupt billionaires with mansions in western countries that they can flee to when the country crashes.
