In my experience when I worked as a chef, specifically for one restaurant owner/chef in particular, they could be a fun person as a friend, with many good points, but they could also be horrendously rude and demeaning in their interaction and behavior towards employees...even when the employees hadn't done anything wrong. It was absolutely unnecessary and often came over as petty and mean-spirited, but that person also had the ability to completely shrug off any critique. They didn't think twice about it, and would later go back to being "fun". Kind of psychotic in a way, but I've experienced that tendency more frequently in cuisine/hospitality employers and managers, than most others.
For Robert specifically, I think the earlier episodes and even intermittently now, he has really genuine concern for and connects with some owners and their families, but yes, it seems the gimmicks and drama card is played too often now. Read a tweet from Irvine as a teaser to episode which played on 24 March, and he said it was the best episode ever. Even so simple a line was a let down. You've kept us coming back for more just in the description of the circumstance and restaurant. No false hype please, it makes me bad letdowns that make viewers mistrust.
