It's not possible that he hates every single meal

he's ever tasted from every place he's been to during this show's run. He - as well as other chef's on other similar shows - look disgusted before they try the food. It's the same reaction every time. They take a bite and push it aside. The 2nd and 3rd dishes come out and it's the same thing until they get to the point of a tempter tantrum.

Do the makers of this show really expect the audience to believe that? Do people who watch these shows regularly really believe that? Every chef in every one of these places makes bad food - from the front of the menu to the back - and turns into a great chef in 36 hours? People buy that?

I don't know how many episodes you've watched, but I'm a casual viewer--I've seen fewer episodes than I've missed--and even so, I remember several times when Irvine liked the food. In one particular case, he said it was the BEST pizza he'd ever had.

With that said, however, I really do see your point, and I've wondered the same thing, i.e., how do people who could barely put out edible food one day turn into amazing, finessed chefs a day or two later. 

I'm not an avid watcher. It's the kind of thing that when I'm sitting around on a Saturday and it comes on, I tend to catch a few episodes in a row. I have never seen him or anyone else on any of the other shows say anything positive about the food. It's always disgust and disgust before they ever try it. They never like it, the customers never like it, it's so negative - in every instance - it's not believable.

What I don't get is that do they actually think people buy that? We know they are exaggerating, so what's the point? Why not tell a more realistic story? It could be more interesting than the same thing every time - "This is horrible...I hate you Robert...everything is great!"

You need to check out a couple of notable episodes: Mamma Lucrezia's and Lemon Tree Grocer. After you watch those, let's talk again, okay? 

Again, I really do see the point you're making, and it is kind of incredible to think that's a 100% accurate take on every situation. I think what happens is that Irvine has preconceived notions about the food, i.e., the restaurant is failing, hence its food MUST be awful. So he's expecting horrible food, and we all know how powerful mind over matter can be. When there's a really outstanding exception, such as Mamma Lucrezia's, I think it completely takes him by surprise!
