I just read that it looks like Common law will not be renewed for a 2ND season. That sucks. I really liked this show and thought it was much better show by the end of the season. In fact the season ender was one of the more enjoyable shows I have seen in a while.
When you post stuff like this, please link to the article, so we can guess about the veracity of the information by reading it ourselves. Otherwise, it just comes off as wild speculation.
The vast majority of that article is wild rumor and speculation, but the single most disturbing thing that makes it lean toward being true is that the options of the leads' contracts were not picked up. The showrunner thing means nothing, as USA has replaced the showrunner on almost every single new show over the last several seasons. Still, this seems like ominous news, and I'm kind of mad about it. I'll still wait for an official announcement. If it hadn't been for the option mention, I would call this bogus, as that article was a steaming pile of rumors. It didn't even qualify the comments about the ratings, by saying it was on a Friday night at 10pm, when it clearly would have done better in a better time slot.
Yeah this news sucks but I had suspicions when it wasn't renewed before the season ended. USA usually doesn't wait this long.
Plus I hate that they aired Friday night after a struggling show. It should have been given a stable show like Psych as a lead in. It should have never been put on Friday night. Shows on Friday don't get super high ratings and you only put a show on Friday if you don't need it to get rockstar ratings.
Shawn: "I solve a case every week and usually one around Christmas"
This sucks if true. This might explain why Sonya Walger (Dr. Ryan) tweeted something not too long ago about how she wished she could be in a long-running series. It seems like she thought her time with Common Law was coming to an end. It reminds me of last year when Colin Ferguson (Jack Carter on Eureka) was tweeting about Eureka coming to an end even before any announcement about the show being cancelled.
This show got me over The Secret Circle cancellation...argh!
Sorta had my suspicions when Warren was tweeting during the season finale and he was saying it like it was the series finale lol. And I find it odd USA hasn't been airing repeats of it like they do with other shows.
For a number of weeks this show's episodes ranked pretty high on the itunes downloads list -- often in the top 10. I hoped something like that would bode well for getting a second season.
Ugh! I loved Common Law...it was a fun quirky show & Michael & Warren weren't exactly ugly either...LOL I'm going to miss it.
Going by the reactions here the show had fans so it makes no sense why it was cancelled! They just needed to move it to another night instead of Friday.
Yeah, I wish they tried it on another night! Even though they replayed it on another night (was it Tuesdays?), I doubt that would give them a good enough idea of whether or not it would work on another night, since viewers who watched Friday night wouldn't necessarily be tuning in again on the replay night...if that makes sense.
As long as Fairly Legal gets canceled along with Common Law, I can live with it. If Fairly Legal comes back, and this doesn't, then I'll have a problem.
I couldn't get into Fairly Legal at all. When I first saw Sarah Shahi in an episode of Psych a few years ago, I thought I'd like to see her in a series, but it's just not working for me. Common Law is much more entertaining.
Season one of Fairly Legal was pretty good. Season two of Fairly Legal was pretty bad. They did blow up the show without really blowing up the show, after season 1, which led to a lot of its problems.
I never hear of or saw Fairly Legal so can't comment on it ...still can't believe they never even gave Common Law a chance. They could have moved it to a different night and that would have solved the problem. Michael & Warren had great chemistry together & the humor was done perfectly fine.
I'm sure it upsets Warren & Michael too that it was cancelled....at least Michael can go back to making movies...can't say I ever saw Warren in anything before but will be looking for him in other projects now.
I'm thinking Ealy's rising star (he seems to be on the verge of a big breakout) might have been a problem, but we'll never know for sure. No matter what, it's a shame.
So is it official? I see that there's a #savecommonlaw hashtag on Twitter, but I don't see any official comments and Ealy's twitter doesn't mention anything.
Ratings are not the issue, from what I understand. Internal issues between the network and the studio are; basically a tug of war between CBS and ABC. At any rate, nothing official has been announced yet so, I'm not making a determination either way. Not yet at least...
You mean CBS and NBC right? I honestly hope you're right, because, if that's the case, it would make sense that the options expired. I agree that ratings shouldn't have been an issue.
CBS owns USA (the network) and the studio producing the series is ABC. Apparently there's some clashing over who exactly owns the rights to the show now. An indication of the series' over all critical and commercial success, if you ask me. No one would bother fighting over something that wasn't valuable.
Because of Common Law, I recently started watching Burn Notice via Netflix. Freaking love it. Burn Notice is better than Common Law but CL isn't that far from behind. I do think the first, maybe only season of CL is just as good as the first season of BN. I really think this show deserves another season or two. I can't think of any recent USA show who didn't get at least two or three seasons.
It's funny you say this, because of all the USA shows, the only one I have compared Common Law to is Burn Notice. I actually thought it had the potential to become better than Burn Notice (one of my favorite shows), so it definitely would be sad for it not to return. It has so much potential.
Fairly Legal had promise in its first season, but season two was pretty bad. I'd be annoyed if it got a third season and CL didn't get renewed, but, hey, nobody's forcing me to watch season three of FL, either.
I think Kole will be fine. This is his fourth series since 2009 and he's got a film in post-production. And he did have a bit part in The Avengers (I was quite startled to see him), for what that's worth. I don't think he's doing any worse than Ealy. He's definitely working, so his agent's got him on somebody's radar.
For some reason, I got the feeling USA wasn't really interested in the show. They put it on Fridays and it wasn't promoted nearly as much as their other shows. It's a shame since it seemed to be a great series.
It's probably more related to the production company. This is the only USA show, as far as I know, from CBS Television Studios. If they handle their stuff anything like CBS handles the network, there was probably a lot of friction over distribution that USA isn't happy about.
Other than the older shows, almost everything new on USA is done under the Universal Cable Productions banner, which means they can do pretty much whatever they want with it. Burn Notice and White Collar are FOX Television, and Suits only lists Dutch Oven. Everything else I could remember off the top of my head was under UCP.
I hope that's not true about the set being dismantled...
The only thing I can find when I Google that's not the same thing I've seen 200 times is an interesting article about when they started looking for actors for the show...2010!
They didn't even greenlight the show until July 2011...they had to recast the character of Dr Ryan and then they got a new executive producer. It seems like they had problems from the beginning so that may be why they are keeping it quite about whether the show comes back right now....
And this article says they filmed in New Orleans......it was clearly Los Angeles!
The Pilot was shot in L.A., the rest of it was clearly not. They were in Atwater Village for one scene, late in the series, and it was a desolate area...lol. That's a relatively densely populated area that was recently featured in some TV show, but I can't remember what show. It's possible they could have used some real stock footage of Glendale Blvd. during that episode, but they haven't been anywhere near L.A. since the Pilot. In fact, I was pretty disappointed to hear they had to move.
The show Franklin & Bash (you might want to try that, if you haven't), famously was set in L.A. but shot in Atlanta for season 1 (the stock footage style of establishing montages was done very similarly in both shows). That was the best L.A. fake I ever saw, as they stayed well away from any identifiable geography, and made good use of whatever footage they did shoot in L.A. for "stock" purposes. They got to move to L.A. for real for season 2. It's also been renewed for a third season.
For TV shows and movies, it's always really easy to identify something being shot in L.A. The blue and white street signs are like nowhere else in L.A., and the residential street signs are also very unique. Probably the best use of L.A. for a TV show in non-descript ways is Criminal Minds.
Didn't know Franklin & Bash had been filmed here! So many shows filmed here now so it was just another one in the mix. Elton John lives here too...Usher...a lot of celebrities...we leave them alone so they like it here. It's hot as hell in the summer though...we have more humidity than LA does. LOL
Hahaha, that's what my hair ends up looking like in humid climates. That's pretty awesome that you didn't realize Franklin & Bash was shot there. They had me fooled at first, as well. That was a really nice disguising of the location, I thought.
Saw today on Cloo that Common Law was going to start airing on Wednesdays. I'd think it would be a waste to just air the same 12 episodes over and over, right?
If they had new episodes Wednesday still isn't a good time slot...Criminal Minds/CSI/Law And Order: SVU are all on that night...my DVR is getting enough of a workout...LOL
Wow, that's very interesting news. I think it would be awesome to air the same 12 episodes over and over again...lol. But, maybe it means more. I'll let it develop.
USA Network has renewed Suits for a 16-episode third season.
The legal drama, which stars Gabriel Macht and Patrick J. Adams, wrapped its summer run in August.
It is scheduled to return for Season 2's final six episodes in January.

The renewal follows new season orders for many of the network’s other dramas, including White Collar, Covert Affairs and Royal Pains.
There’s still no word on the fates of some of the network’s other primetime fare, including Necessary Roughness, Common Law, Political Animals and Fairly Legal.
Because all those shows are probably done. If anything, they could be delaying the announcement in hopes of somehow saving Common Law. I remember earlier someone posted about the sets being torn down. That doesn't necessarily mean it's canceled, because they could move the location like several other shows have done since season 1. I am just grasping at any straw that gives a chance of the show coming back. ;)
There are so many Cop-shows that are just baaah. And this one is funny and fresh and they don't want to give it a second chance? When you put a Tv-Show on such a bad time-slot (Friday ), than don't complain about the ratings.

Monk was on Fridays and Pysch started out on Fridays, so USA isn't "green" about airing shows on that day. I remember people were nervous about moving Psych to Wednesdays b/c people has been so accustomed to the Friday schedule.

I wish they would announced if Burn Notice has been renewed for a 7th season. Funny for me because I just started watching Burn Notice finally because of Common Law. Warren Kole reminds me of Jeffrey Donovan on Burn Notice. I watch several eps of Burn Notice over and over with Netflix. That show is hilarous. Michael Weston is my favorite tv character.
If Common Law really is cancelled I hope Warren Kole gets another tv gig. I really liked him on CL. I know Michael Ealy will continue to get movie gigs and probably another tv gig.
I know...this is the first time I've seen Warren but have seen Michael in other projects. If Common Law doesn't make it I hope Warren is in several pilots for next season and he gets a show.
I just read it wasn't renewed :( It was one of the best new series I'd seen in a long time, with a great cast (with actors I hadn't seen before), great chemistry and an intersting storyline. It's annoying since most series on USA seem to do pretty well, and at least get a second season.
I think almost all of my favourite series are from the USA network, so it's even more annoying if a good series like this can get cancelled - hopefully none of my other favourites will be in danger of cancellation anytime soon. At least the season was able to have a proper ending without leaving any unanswered questions which often happens to a lot of series. I'll definitely be getting this on DVD and will be a series I will rewatch a few times.
It was a great show funny and very fresh over the last few years I have lost intrest in usa programming because of stupid choices like this. I think there is only two shows I watch on usa Royal pains and burn notice. I used to watch fairly leagal until the revamped it for a second season which killed the show. At least they could have givin it a second chance and maybe givin it a better time slot. I used to love usa but man they have killed there shows.
