Do you like Elizabeth Olsen?

I think part of how much you'll like this movie will be dependent on how much you connect with Sarah. I found her so easy to connect with even without back story because Elizabeth gives such a strong and convincing performance. I was completely invested. So even when she made some unfortunate decisions, I wasn't critiquing her, I was just hoping she'd be all right.

She's a great actress and it was impressive how she carried this whole film, and it's only, what, her 3rd movie? I look forward to seeing what she does next.

I wrote more about the actual movie in my review, if anyone wants to read it:

That's one reason I think I'll really enjoy the movie, because I love her. She was so great in Martha Marcy May Marlene and looks to give another great performance here.

Based on this movie, she's pretty overrated. Her supposed "crying" sounded more like stifled laughs than anything and the constant crying got rather annoying. I'm not a fan of films where the female cries constantly instead of really trying to fight back. It's kind of irritating and makes women look weaker than they are.

There were plenty of moments in the film where she fought back the tears and silently screamed. Regarding it sounding like laughter, deep terror like that is going to make crying sound choppy. When you sob for so long and start to lose your breath you start to inhale uncontrollably and it sounds like that. I'm just assuming you're a guy, but I know most girls can agree that uncontrollable sobbing sounds like this.

reply

YES!

I watched it with my Dad, and he commented a couple of times that she/her character had really strong self-control for holding her breath and being quiet when she was hiding. I didn't see her dissolving into a useless, weeping lump so much as getting hysterical from the stress. I think pretty much anyone in that situation (feeling pursued through a dark house by unseen assailants for an hour, unable to escape) would hyperventilate a little bit too. Men AND women!

Agreed.

*nods*

Choppy crying? what is crying supposed to sound like from a woman?

Not all men or women are tough-guys' nor do they have to be, and when they are, it doesn't necessarily need to be expressed by the actor/actress by acting like Rambo.... wtf?

sorry but i'm a female and I find my personality to be somewhat like her's... I despise someone stating that the character was weak because of any stereotype version of "female strength." You guys watch too many movies, women are different, we can also have internal strength that motivates us!

For me, men whining is the same. It was a movie about the fear of a child abuse sufferer, get over it.

reply

No you get over it, it's annoying, man or woman, you're just gonna have to deal with it. It's my opinion and I have the right to have it, get over it

I originally felt the same way...I was wondering why she wasn't fighting back, or calling out to her attackers, or finding a weapon instead of hiding. But then I realized that she was hiding from herself and from her painful memories, and at the end, she finally faced them head-on. Women do have different ways of showing fear and anger, and it doesn't always manifest itself as fighting back with fists. Sometimes we have to find a different approach.

I didn't particularly like the movie, but I think she did a great job:) I look forward to watching her career develop.

I love Elizabeth Olsen and predict that she will have a great career. Her performances are very nuanced and convincing--and she looks great! I just hope that she picks her next film very carefully. She has done the "disturbed young woman struggling with past trauma" thing twice now.

I am wondering how people would compare Elizabeth Olsen with Amanda Seyfried.

reply

The movie wasn't very good, but I was very impressed by her performance. It's the first time I've seen her acting, and I look forward to seeing her next projects.

reply

She is amazing and it's a shame MMMM didn't get any love from the Oscars and globes. Of the big time newcomers, she could be right behind Jessica Chastain in talent.

Thankfully, as much as she looks exactly like her billionaire sisters, I don't see them on screen. Which I suppose is another measure of just how talented Elizabeth is. I wish her the best once she starts making films full time.

reply

I didn't like the ending, but I did like her performance.

reply

@OP , you 'connected' with her? Uh oh, I smell a stalker.

reply

She definitely got the looks of the family, hehe. Hope she doesn't develop an eating disorder like her sister did.

reply

I do, she was very good in this and excellent in Martha Marcy.

She made what would have been a terrible movie, into a mediocre one and that's meant as a compliment. She did a really good job, it's just everything else just wasn't very good at all.

reply

Yes! I think she's talented and really pretty. Hard to believe she is related to the Full House kids...

reply

She was truly great. I didn't even realize this was an olsen twin, hadn't been keeping up I guess, but it didn't look like her to me. She isn't aging well, but her acting sure is coming along, wow good stuff.

reply

She's an Olsen sister, but not one of the twins. According to IMDB she's three years younger than Mary Kate and Ashley.
