If Caché were an actual thriller...

Spoilers inherent.

I hate these kinds of movies where the police are stupid, but the main character is even stupider. Don't get me wrong, it was spooky and disturbing as hell, but the way James handles everything is completely retarded. At the point where he murders and subsequently buries Bill, the movie completely lost me. As soon as he received the video of Amy tied and gagged, why didn't he immediately notify the police? When he found the cat's head in the mail drop, why didn't he leave the evidence intact and notify the police? When he finally tracks the creeper and catches his license plate number, WHY DOESN'T HE NOTIFY THE POLICE? And why are the police so *beeping* stupid that they would even begin to suspect James, when James is clearly the only character throughout who is even moderately worried for his wife? UGH, SO STUPID.

While I agree with you on the stupidity of James' actions, most of the events were not provable...the cat head turned up missing and the current cat was an imposter, the image of Amy on the computer was fleeting and gone, the music/computer turning on and off...not much he could say other than to make himself look like a nut case to the cops. And when he did get the license plate number, it was too late. But still, I would have pursued it further with the cops and hired a private detective....but then, we wouldn't have the movie. Anyhow, I didn't understand your comment about "burying Bill", because why did the cop show up and say that about an hour ago Bill called to complain about James harrassing Bill?

reply

James had killed and buried Bill earlier and the stalker/killer had apparently placed a camera in the front grill of James' car as we see the footage from the perspective of a hidden camera and thus the stalker/killer knew James had killed Bill. The murder and actual body we never see but we are to presume this is what has happened when we see him digging a hole in a desolate area at night by the light of his headlights. I assumed it was the stalker/killer who had called the police and pretended to be Bill since he knew James had already killed Bill and it was just another way for him to let James know that he (stalker/killer) knew everything James was doing. I thought it was so James would become completely unnerved when the police showed up and supposedly had had a complaint from Bill who James knew he had just killed and buried. The stalker/killer was enjoying toying with James.

SPOILERS:

Yep...that's how I saw it too

The bit where I thought he really was stupid was when he didn't call the police at getting the video of gagged Amy. If only because if something did happen to her, you would not want that on your computer when the police are investigating...that looks very bad LOL You phone and tell them, cos then it doesn't look like you're hiding it

Yeah, the whole film is built on idiot plots and idiot characters. The only one who even has a clue is the villain, and he's completely over the edge in the other direction. He has unrestricted access to everything everywhere; all of the funds, technology, and skills necessary to do anything he needs to do without fault; and the godlike knowledge of events that allows him to perfectly execute every step of his convoluted and inane plot.

It just isn't believable in the slightest.
