Only good entry in this Geriatirc Half-Way House.

1 and 3 were abysmal, and 4 somehow looks worse than 3.

2 was the only good one.

I hate to agree. Yeah, #1 was alright to get things going, but it wasn't as much fun as 2. #3 has moments, but the new characters were poor.

One had some very cool scenes and Eric Roberts was a really fun villain. 2 certainly delivered most of the core premise and promise of the movies, but half the movie was over before it finally did. 3 had some great stuff with Snipes and Banderas is a good time. Far worse than the immortal classics of the 80s and 90s these stars hail from but we're definitely lucky to have these flicks. 4 looks like something even lower down the totem pole than Statham's last Transporter flick. We'll see.

I agree about Snipes and Banderas, they were my favorite parts of 3.

reply

I don't know if was budget or ego or what. But they made such a big deal about Snipes. Both in film, story wise, "we need this guy". And in film making. "Blade's back, baby!" And then they did nothing with him. I don't get that. Banderas was unexpected but clearly just wanted to have a blast with a larger than life character which he nailed. Since he made 13th Warrior, I suspect he just likes this kind of movie making.

Still haven't seen 3 dt the pg13. Glad 4 is a hard R, will see it.

Ex1 I think came out of the original idea Tarantino had for Inglorious Bastards, A 'Dirty Dozen' type WWII action movie featuring retro 80s action stars, for whatever reasons IGB became something else but then Stallone (who was originally involved with IGB) must've taken the idea to do that in present day.. but the cast was lacking 80s stars really, just Stallone and Dolph (and Eric Roberts) with Bruce and Arnold only in a cameos (like the Planet Hollywood promotion interview on Aspel & Company)

Ex2 pretty much delivers on what Ex1 promised (hence its the biggest box office worldwide, Ex1 did slightly more domestic) you have Stallone, Dolph, with Arnold and Bruce featuring properly, the big coup of Van Damme as the villain, and even Chuck f**kin Norris! (and its directed by the Con Air guy)

Ex3 initially seemed to be building on Ex2 success adding the insane casting of Mel as the villain (obviously less in demand since his fall from grace but still a big f***ing deal for movie fans), Wesley Snipes and Harrison Ford! (taking over from Bruce due to falling out with Stallone over pay). However it was all undone by the focus on the embarrassing young team and the PG13 rating (something Ex2 had narrowly avoided), done to appeal to the FastnFurious audience (pretty stupid decision if you think about it) and it bombed at the box office (domestically anyway, overseas it was about same as Ex1)

And now Ex4 looks almost like a stdvd cheap knock off almost like Bruce was doing in his final years (or Stallone did with those cheapy Escape Plan sequels). and its back to Ex1 with NO 80s or 90s action stars aside Sly and Dolph despite rumours of the obvious likes of Seagal, Cage, Travolta, KRussell, Brosnan (and even The Rock)
