For those who experience hynogogic hallucinations...

I sometimes experience hynogogic hallucinations, so seeing this film was of great interest for me. However, I feel they didn't even scratch the surface of what it's like to see these apparitions. This film is built around jump scares and sudden movements, while my experience has been about seeing these shapes standing still, or moving to but a minor extent. My perspective is that their approach was entirely off, as this film could have succeeded greatly, had it been a horror film built around atmosphere and not jump scares.

What are your guys' perspectives?

I've had dreams where I feel like someone's in my room and then I actually wake up scared as crap and have to turn on the lights to check.

Those are the hallucinations associated with awareness during sleep paralyses.

As an insomniac who has at times went several months with no sleep and ended up being completely lethargic through exhaustion I've seen all sorts in my zombified states. Hallucinations of friends walking around my room and the one-sided conversations I hold with them, a variety of strange animals in my room or around the house, strange noises as though I can hear things that are tiny like bugs, as though I have superman's hearing. Add to that a feeling of euphoria which is akin to being on great drugs and wandering around aimlessly in a messy state having conversations with objects while completely oblivious to the real people in your home. Fun fun funworld.

Only ever seen shadow folk a handful of times though and usually as a bad period of insomnia is coming to an end and you feel like you are genuinely slipping in to sleep, then..BANG! Muscles don't work and everything in your peripheral vision is coming to life suddenly and it's terrifying. I've never felt like I couldn't breathe though, only that I couldn't move and that enormous amount of effort results in you kicking out so hard that the poor cat lands in the hallway :/.
