Could have used more character development in the beginning

And the whole swimming thing could have maybe been done differently somehow. To me, the amazing duration wasn't captured to much on film.

Gulli didn't even finish a single joke with the seagulls.

I agree. Also hard to care since it seemed like they were trying to sink their boat

Terrible storytelling in a terrible movie.

They should have watched The Poseidon Adventure and James Cameron's Titanic and take notes on what made them good.

I hope you're being sarcastic...

Nope. Despite those movies being shlock, you always knew the character's motivation, who they were and why and (just ask any audience member) you felt for those characters like they were alive.

This movie had people BASED ON REAL PEOPLE and it still couldn't make me care. It should've been the easiest job in the world to make me NOT want to see these people drown. But instead, we get introduced to 6-8 people that just fall into the background and then they all die. I've seen more work put into henchmen in 80's action movies than this.

And then implying that the disaster was man made because people were drinking. THESE WERE REAL INDIVIDUALS. It's kinda hateful to suggest that something that happened is someone's fault when there's no evidence of that... Kinda like how they made the foreigner in United93 be the only guy against them rushing the cockpit. But at least that was done to continue drive the story. Nothing that happened with the seamen prior to the crash told us anything about their characters, except that they were drunk and didn't care about their jobs - which is no way to do a story about an accident that is still recent in many people's minds.

As opposed to Titanic with its mere 11 oscars based on real people (all except a few).

Whether you like Titanic or not is beside the point, it did an amazing job of telling a true story of one of mankind's worst disasters. It just happened to weave a fictional love story in it to stop if from being totally bleak.
