What do you think happened?

The ending was kept ambiguous but what do you think Robert did? Did he comply with his wife and gave everything he had to his wife? Or he just told his wife to *beep* off......

reply

He didn't do anything. It is a fictional story, it ended where it ended.

Actually, it's an ambiguous ending, designed to make you think and use your own imagination as to what direction the character would have taken from there. It didn't spell everything out for the viewer so it's meant to elicit discussions like this. It might not be for TxMike, who just crumples up his bag of popcorn, tosses it in the aisle in a most ill-bred manner, and never thinks about the movie again because he's not accustomed to using his noggin.

Gere's character is a very charming man, and I imagine he isn't have even charmed his way back into his wife's good graces, if not, he would have taken the deal and signed over his company, but would continue to con money out of people in a new company. He would do anything buit admit wrongdoing and serve time.

His wife mentioned some off shore accounts and I'm sure she knows about her husband's finances. I think he finally signed the papers and gave all his official assets to his daughter. Anyhow he lost the respect of his wife since he cheated on her and he lost the respect of his daughter since he put her at risk with this deal (she might have lost her license).

I think he would have given his daughter everything, especially now that he feels guilty and exposed. If he can buy his way out of trouble with her then it would be consistent with his character's choices. It's just money. Knowing him, he'll find more money or finesse himself into a better situation. And then if the stuff ever goes through in Russia or wherever then he's back on top for real.
