shareI rewatched the film yesterday and noticed that she didn't stand at the end, when everyone else gave her husband a standing ovation. While etiquette would support a wife's sitting in such a situation, I think the fact that the daughter greets Miller so coldly is an indication that the marriage sincerely was at an end.
So Miller's "arbitrage" failed on an emotional level, meaning he attempted to treat people like commodities in a different "economy" (French), and in this case, came out the loser.
It's really just an indication that they're upset with him
