Why the title?

What does 'Septien' refer to?

The film was worth a look, quirky, yet not in the usual ways. However, the title is a mystery.

I just saw this and I have the same question. I've read countless reviews and articles, but have yet to find the answer. I have no idea if this is relevant in any way, but this did cross my mind. After the Red Rooster was exorcised, the three brother shared a cathartic moment, each of them kicking a football through the goal posts. In the late 1970's, the Dallas Cowboys had a kicker named Rafael Septien who's career came to an end when he was arrested for having sex with a 10 year old girl.

Very interesting. I remember Septien. Perhaps the kicking of the extra point would be the finality of the touchdown scored after the brothers repentance.

I logged in here to see if anyone had an answer to this, and found this thread. At a blog called "What Pete's Watching," I found this:

As for the definition of "septien," Tully says it captures "a particular feeling of nostalgia," which for the sports-loving director/writer could refer to Rafael Septien, the scandal-plagued place kicker who played in the National Football League from 1977 to 1986.

I also found this quote in a Nick Dawson interview of Tully in "Filmmaker":

“Septien” is a word that reminds me of growing up in the 1980s and playing with football cards. Also, not to be too pretentious about this, but we were really trying to create a unique, difficult-to-describe tone, something that would make it impossible to pin down with one overriding genre, and it seemed like maybe if we came up with an unfamiliar word, perhaps that could be the adjective to describe the movie.

I just watched this movie and was curious about the title as well. I immediately (upon seeing the title), figured it had something to do with "7." While there are extraneous characters, the main characters (anyone with dialogue) total 7 (3 brothers, Wilbur, Red Rooster, Savannah, and the Preacher [though he had 2 girls with him? holy trinity?]) The significance of 7 in football AND the fact about the ex-NFL player and that Tully says it has nostalgia from the 80s...I think the question has been answered. At least as much as it is going to be.

This 2011 article says the movie was "inspired" by the story of former Dallas Cowboys kicker, Rafael Septien (1978-1986):

I hate the Cowboys but Rafael was a fine kicker and, apparently, a pederast.
