IT'S FOR CHILDREN PEOPLE!

It's hilarious to read some of these comments. This is a children's movie people. If you were a child you would be looking at this movie with wander and awe. Stop being so cynical and allow the children to be introduced to or continue to marvel in the age of the dinosaurs. If this were scientifically accurate and didn't have the voices the kids would be bored to tears. There is a reason why the Land Before Time movies and the movie Dinosaur did so well and are still loved by children. Stop being so grown up and sucking all of the fun and imagination out of this film.

reply

jmcnamara-1, how would you make the movie, keeping children in mind? Now before you answer, just remember how easily bored a child can get.

reply

Cut the voices. Kids watch documentaries all the time in school. They can handle it.

Land Before Time is one thing; it's never pretending to be anything close to scientifically accurate and it doesn't have the stupid bathroom humor this seems to be relying on.

reply

Yes kids watch documentaries, but ft hey would much rather watch this movie that will entertain them and enjoy the dinosaurs. Kids don't care how scientifically accurate it is. And as for the "bathroom humor", I'll wait and make up my own mind instead of taking the word of one critic.

reply

It's not just the critic, it's the marketing. The humor looks awful.

reply

Awful in whose opinion? One of the gentlemen on here said he took his girlfriends son and he loved it. He said he kept talking about 2 of the main characters. I'm just saying to each his own. Just because we adults think it looks like a waste of time doesn't mean the kids will. We shouldn't be so quick to call it crap when we haven't seen it yet and it isn't even made for us.

reply

Regardless of the target audience, everyone will judge something based on how its marketing looks. We trash Adam Sandler movies when we think they look awful, and it's no different for kids movies. Disney, Pixar and My Little Pony have already shown that you don't have to cater to kids at the exclusion of adults.

reply

Well of course. The adults may enjoy it also. My point is that people on here are saying the movie is crap because it isn't scientifically accurate and one person even said basically we are treating our kids like "retards". I'm just saying for folks like that to get their panties out of a bunch and just let the kids enjoy it.

reply

[deleted]

Are you kidding me? You've got some nerve saying that to me. I take my kids to movies they enjoy. Period. I sit there and laugh right along with them and enjoy seeing them happy and having a good time. I'm not a soccer mom. I don't have to have anyone's stamp of approval to know what my kids will or won't watch, which is why your opinion of this movie will not change my mind in the least as to whether or not I take them to see it. If they see the preview and want to see it then we have a movie date for Saturday night. Someone like you who gets so bent out of shape and just plain rude; who is so arrogant as to say parents who take their kids to this movie is treating them like retards, are the ones I truly feel sorry for. You have my sympathy. I really hope you don't have kids and if you do I feel sorry for them.

reply

[deleted]

Ok. Lol. I've obviously hit a nerve with you. Bless your heart you must really be a miserable person. The sad thing is that you keep preaching about how parents like myself treat my kids like retards just for taking them to see a fun movie and pointing out how awful I must be as a parent but yet just the words in your comments make it painfully obvious that you have issues that hopefully aren't being passed along to your kids. My kids are smart healthy and happy and they have a mom and dad that love them unconditionally. No amount of name calling from someone like you is going to change that.

reply

[deleted]

LOL :-) There i go hitting that nerve again. You don't even realize that you are making yourself sound like an idiot. I'm fairly sure that everyone else can agree that this message board is suppose to be for people that would like to discuss this movie. You however have turned it into something ugly. Judging by your comments made toward me you are rude, conceited, have narcissistic tendencies and are just plain foul. Why don't you educate yourself, grow up a little and then come back and maybe we can have an adult discussion.

reply

[deleted]

Just for the record I'm done arguing with you because you are obviously one of those people that doesn't know what else to say to try and prove a point (that doesn't exist) so you resort to immature name calling. The name calling doesnt bother me in the least because you dont know me. You are just ranting like a child throwing a hissy fit. I have more important things to do than to take the time to keep up this rediculous argument. I'm actually "dumbing myself down" just by arguing with you.

reply

[deleted]

Yes you are absolutely right. I'm a big baby that is throwing in the towel because I refuse to carry on a juvenile argument with a juvenile minded person like yourself. I'm sure if you troll long enough you can find someone else's time to waste with an unintelligent juvenile argument.

reply

[deleted]

Ignorant piece of crap? Oh my goodness lol. That was funny. As I said before, juvenile. I can't let anything go? You have completely ran out of things to say. That's obvious. Like I said, go trolling for someone else to argue with. I'm done wasting my time with you. Judging by your comments you have no education, no sense of humor and absolutely no class. B-)

reply

[deleted]

Way to go. You couldn't get the reaction you wanted out of me by insulting ME so you brought my family into it, started insulting them and thought THAT might get you somewhere. That's pretty low, even for someone like you.

reply

[deleted]

The other person that commented was right. Now that I go back and read all of your comments it is painfully obvious that you are a teenager at best. You insult people just to try and keep the conversation going because you are angry, lonely and miserable. You have no friends so you come on here to try and make yourself sound important. Your life obviously sucks because you are jealous of others who sound like they have a normal life and treat their kids with love, apparently because you don't get enough yourself. Now that I've realized this I really am done with you. Go ahead with your name calling. Insult whoever to try and get a reaction. It's not going to work. I'm sorry you are missing all of these things in your life. I hope when you grow up it gets better for you. Normally if someone insulted my family I would tear them apart but I just can't seem to make myself get angry with you. I truly do feel sorry for you and I hope things get better.

reply

[deleted]

Its obvious that person doesn't have children. They sound a little too young to be having them anyway.

reply

[deleted]

I agree.....probably no children. I was trying to keep the conversation adult. I was trying to avoid name calling and just talk about what was supposed to be talked about which was the movie.but you are right I am probably arguing with a child.

reply

[deleted]

By the way, as I've said before kids like all sorts of film for entertainment. Documentaries are wonderful. Educational shows and cartoons are wonderful, but so are the plain old laugh out loud movies that are just FUN for kids. My goodness. SMH. :-/

reply

[deleted]

When March of the Penguins came out, neither of my children were teens yet (they are four years apart), so the youngest was no older than six and they insisted we see it at least three times at the theatre (we live on a Base where movies are free).

reply

Kids watched the WAlking With Dinosaur TV show when it was on.
And guess what? They bloody loved it. The entire world did in 1999.

Shame in modern day society kids are being spoon-fed everything. Kids are literally being dumbed down and constantly condescended upon.

reply

Cut the voices. Kids watch documentaries all the time in school. They can handle it.

This is true, I saw the Walking With Dinosaurs series when it first came out on VHS in 2011 (I was 11 years old and I rather enjoyed the storytelling). They even made a kiddie documentary of the series with Prehistoric Planet. Talking dinos is going to be a throwback to The Land Before Time minus the singing, oh god I hope there's no singing.

reply

Walking With Dinos came out in 2006? I was told they came out in 2001 on VHS.

I DONT treat my children like retards. I treat them like the intelligent open minded CHILDREN that they are. When my boys want to watch documentaries they will watch the Discovery Channel or Netflix. When I take them to the theater they want to be entertained. I guess I'm one of those awful mothers that actually let her children be children and don't expect them to act like little adults. There is nothing wrong with letting a child watch fiction or somewhat scientifically inaccurate films.

reply

Why do they have to be mutually exclusive? The Planet Earth documentaries would be absolutely breathtaking in a movie theater.

reply

Of course they would. Ask a group of 6 year Olds to choose between this movie and the Planet Earth documentaries and see which they choose. My goodness I love documentaries. I enjoy watching certain documentaries with my boys. I'm not attacking documentaries or watching something educational. In my initial post I was merely pointing out that a bunch of adults are getting up in arms and bent out of shape over a kids movie. Adults are actually getting angry over a children's movie and I think it's ridiculous.

reply

I think you really have a point there. While I still criticize the fact that they're using the WWD title, this really should be viewed as a children's film. Does it alienate older audiences? Yes it does. It was a big dissappointment for a lot of us because we really expected to see a movie based on the show we hold so dear.

I just think it's a missed opportunity. Children like dinosaurs in many forms, with or without human personalities. With a little bit of creativity they could've come up with something entertaining without the necessity of simplifying the whole concept of the show. Well, I guess its time to move on now.

reply

just jumping in here, i think the reason for the hate, i have not seen the movie yet but i am a huge dino fan, land before time was the first movie i saw in theaters and jurassic park was awesome to me as 8 and still is one of my favorite movies, i have no problem with inaccurate children's movies with dinosaurs...

the reason i believe i am going to agree with the gripes with this movie is the unnecessary addition of voice work to a story that i heard you could just as easily understand without it regardless of age... you watch documentaries with your kids then you probably have seen a few where they just let the animals tell the story, did your kids still find these entertaining? i am not attacking you i am really wondering.

i was so exited to see a simple but fun story told by the dinos actions and beautiful images. and i think allot of other people was to, instead of an ok movie to show your kids it could have been amazing...

again hope i didnt come of mean....

Marry Christmas

reply

Mr_Marius. No offense taken at all. The other guy that I replied to, who has since been deleted apparently, had some kind of serious issues.....name calling and such. My kids do enjoy certain documentaries where the animals tell the stories themselves without the silly voice overs. We would have still gone to see this movie if that was how it was made. Whether it would keep their attention for the length of a full length film would depend on how well it was made. We will still go see this one, silly voice overs and all, because my boys love dinosaurs. It has been suggested by some of these people on here that if I take my kids to see it then I am treating them like "retards". No, I'm just taking my kids to see a movie that I'm pretty sure they will enjoy. That doesn't make them "retards" that makes them children. Merry Christmas to you too :-)

reply

My boys have never been treated like "retards" or been made to feel like "retards" for enjoying a children's movie which is exactly what this is. I'm imagining a kid being told "No son, I refuse to take you to see this movie because it's garbage. It isn't scientifically accurate and I'm not going to treat you like a retard by allowing you to watch this scientifically inaccurate film that includes talking dinosaurs". OMG! The horror! Poor kid :-/

reply

The previous comment was directed to jmcnamara-1 specifically.

reply

Aw yes the go to term to justify shoveling garbage, basically putting down children treating them like retards
Umm...one problem with your assessment: It's not garbage. We took our 6 year old to see it yesterday and it was very entertaining. Her mother and I both enjoyed it. It was fun, and cute. Not garbage at all.

And Karl Urban was in it.

Beautifully animated, and the live action backdrop created a neat look.

reply

Jesus Christ, chill.

reply

Aside from the voices this movie is actually very accurate.

reply

If this were scientifically accurate and didn't have the voices the kids would be bored to tears.

Except when it's about dinosaurs. I´m really bothered by that kind of mentality. Children LOVE dinosaurs the way they are. They don´t need voices or antropomorphic personalities to appeal to children. Kids can memorize dozens of unpronouncable scientific names and feel proud of it. Walking With Dinosaurs was an immensly succesful show that stimulated interest in dinosaurs all over the world.

There is a reason why the Land Before Time movies and the movie Dinosaur did so well and are still loved by children.

Yes, there is a reason, just like there is a reason why WWD did so well and is still loved by children and adults alike. The Land Before Time was succesful because it was just a good fable. And I´ve got nothing against kid flicks. It´s just that Walking with Dinosaurs wasn't a children's show or a fable to begin with, it was an educational family program. Sure, you can adapt the format to make a better movie out of it but to take away the educational aspect and replace it with cartoony adventures just takes the essence out of WWD.

The only real crime is that they attached the WWD name to this project. They could´ve made a dinosaur kids film anytime, but they decided to use a popular brand, so they should expect a certain reaction from fans. WWD is for everyone! Let WWD and The Land Before Time be their own separate movies!

I´m still gonna watch it though. I´m curious to know what they turned one of my favourite childhood shows into.

reply

The OP is absolutely correct, couldn't have put it better myself. The negative critics seriously need to lighten up, step back a little and actually think to yourself what it is you're getting so worked up over.

So what? They used the name of a successful documentary for this movie. If they used the title "Running With Dinosaurs" would that make you all feel better? Jeez, just get over it, take your kids to see it (if you have any) and just enjoy the moment of seeing them happy!

reply

Well I don't have any children yet. If I had them, I would show them both this film and other dinosaur documentaries to let them decide what they prefer. And like I said, I'm still planning to see this despite my criticism.

The isssue I have with using misleading titles is that they're, well, misleading. Suppose they made a movie called Godfather 4 only to reveal it's actually a vampire gangster film for teenagers. Why did they acquire the rights of the series if they weren't planning to do an adaptation in the first place? It sounds like they're just exploiting the success of the brand. This film was basically marketed as a WWD movie until the trailers were shown. Well I'm glad I saw them because now I know what to expect.

reply

Well, the owners to the rights of the WWD name were obviously happy and confident with this new installment, correct? Otherwise they wouldn't have authorized it to be named WWD!

reply

...or they were paid off

reply

Well it is 20th Century Fox, so they're not exactly beneath this.

reply

The negative critics are the people who suffer with first world problems and have too much first world time to make drama where there shouldn't be drama. Like going on an epic rant about a kids movie and go nuts like a tumblr moron.

reply

The original Walking With Dinosaurs series was loved by children, are you saying that in just over 10 years, children are unable to enjoy the exact same thing without retarded voice overs?

reply

Nope. That's not what I'm saying. My original post was to point out that it's a kids movie. So what if it has retarded voice overs. Let the kids enjoy it then take them home and let them continue to watch the documentaries. My point is let the kids be kids. Cartoons, documentaries, special effects movies with "retarded" voice overs; it's not hurting anything to let them enjoy it. I just don't understand how people can say I'm dumbing my kids down or treating them like retards by letting them watch this movie. My kids watch all kinds of movies; grown up movies like Star Wars, Superman, The Avengers and Transformers, documentaries and some cartoons (some educational and some just for fun). Anyone that would tell me they grew up NOT watching a little of ALL of the above I'd say they don't know what they're missing. Am I the only parent that takes offense at being told I treat my kids like retards for taking them to see this movie? Does taking them to see this movie and them enjoying it make them any less smart? Absolutely not. I swear, this is so not the big deal that everyone is making it out to be.

reply

Here's the thing. By adding the stupid voice overs they have alienated the original audience. Kids would have enjoyed it like they always had if it were narrated in the same way as the original show and stage play, but they chose to make it undesirable for their original fans.

They could have pleased everyone, instead they dumbed it down and ruined something great.

reply

Lupin - lll I agree. They have alienated their fan base by changing what was already working just fine. It would have been cool to see it on the big screen just as it was and especially in 3-D. However, I'm betting there are going to be a lot of kids (and maybe even some adults too) that enjoy this movie also. Either way we will be going to see it because we love dinosaurs. :-)

reply

I agree, and this is the main thing that bothers me as well. If it was only a regular dinosaur movie, I wouldn't have minded it. Okay, the annoying voices and unnecessary jokes would probably still have turned me off, but point is, from day one since the movie's announcement, I kept tabs on its progress because of its title and affiliation with the original series.

Granted, I still haven't seen the movie, but all of what I read and seen of it so far makes it clear that it's lacking one of the most important aspects that made me interested in it in the first place.

It's a shame that all of the other dinosaur productions that I've been looking forward to in the last few years turned out to be similar (though smaller) disappointments. Dinosaur Revolution AKA Reign of Dinosaurs, BBC's very own Planet Dinosaur which was another attempted successor of the original WWD, even March of the Dinosaurs was disappointing to a degree. But by far this movie takes the cake.

reply

Its not actually a children films. The film doesn't have the humor of something like a Pixar film.

reply

I grew up with the WWD series in the past.... this is just...i cant explain it. I loved the documentarys and the amazing visuals of WWD. But this??? dont cal it WWD just becous you can. im sry i cant like this movie...

(sry for the bad english)

reply

Well thank goodness. Maybe someone reported him and he won't be back.

reply

"It's for kids"=worst "excuse" ever for something not to be held to a certain standard of quality. (NOT saying that this movie will suck, just pointing something out.) If I had kids, I'd only really want to show them things that are great enough for me as an adult to love--such as The Land Before Time.

reply

Saying that something is for kids is no excuse for lowering the bar of quality. The problem isn't that this is a kids movie, the problem is that it's a poorly done kids movie.

Imagine if this had come out immediately after the show. I was in love with the show as a kid of 9 years old when it came out. If I had seen this right after that, I would have been massively dissapointed. Part of the appeal of WWD was that it was a nature documentary about DINOSAURS. That's AWESOME! It makes them seem all the more real to a kid!

When we go into see WWD, we don't expect The Land Before Time, we expect something making dinosaurs look cool and real.

The most insulting thing you can tell a kid is that something he loves is for kids. And the only thing more insulting than that is telling them that something was dumbed down for them because they are kids.

Not only would this have been a better movie without the narration, but children would have loved it more.

reply

Aw, shucks. I totally concur with you about kid's entertainment and dinosaurs, but I'm disappointed to hear that this movie isn't well-done like WWD. I guess that's pretty much what I was expecting, though, based on what I'd seen and read. I know it's not exactly being lauded. The trailer piqued my interest because of the possible similarities to past dino productions, but didn't look exceptional unto itself.
Oh, well. It'll be one of the hundreds of Netflix rentals, 'cause I definitely want to judge for myself. The last two movies I saw in the theater were my two favorites of the year, and obsessed me so much that going to see something crummier would feel like an even bigger letdown. xD
