'Cretacious Cut'

So apparently the BluRay will contain a "Cretaceous Cut (the movie in its "natural" version)". What the hell does that mean? A version without the stupid voice-over?
That would be nice, but ONLY FOR THE 3D VERSION?????

It's only in the 3D version, but you don't have to watch it in 3D, and it works in normal 2D players. It's SOOOO MUUUUCH BETTER. I cannot emphasize this enough.

Hi. Would you mind explaining. I understand that I will have to purchase the 3D set for the Cretaceous Cut, but is it on a separate blu-ray disc? Or does the 3D disc actually play in a 2D player? I have some 3D blu-ray discs and they don't play on my 2D player. If it is on a separate 2D blu-ray disc, does the 3D disc also contain the Cretaceous Cut watchable in 3D? And are you certain the regular 2D blu-ray release doesn't contain the Cut?
Sorry to be asking all this, and if you don't know the answers, I don't mind. I'm just getting a little confused and can't find any straight-forward info on it, especially when you say "it works in normal 2D players". I'm still waiting for the home release here in the UK (next month), which of course might be completely different, I just really don't want to be wasting my money on something that won't work.
Cheers

It's all on the same disc, it can be watched in 2D or 3D. There have been other movies released this way. Dino King's blu-ray can only be purchased this way. It definitely works in normal players as well.

And the 2d-only release definitely does not contain the Cretaceous cut.

So what's the Cretaceous Cut exactly like? Is it simply the same movie, only without the dialogue? Does it still have a narrator? Does it feature the same soundtrack? Does it have the live-action sequences with humans?

I think I'll give it a look, purely out of interest. Still, I can't imagine taking out the dialogue could solve every issue I had with this film. It would probably still feature the whole "dinosaur romance" plot. But maybe it would become a bearable film to watch with your children (even though I don't have any).

reply

Exact same movie (minus the beginning and end with the humans), exact same music and sound effects, no voices at all in any place.

It's an improvement, but still has some weird quirks, like the rewind/falling in the river and the repeated zooming on the gorgo's tiny arms... But it's much more watchable, and I'm sure this is MUCH closer to what was originally intended.

Is the Cretaceous Cut Bluray only or can it be obtained on regular DVD?

It's only available on the 3D blu-ray (which can be viewed in a 2D player.)

In other words, you must pay top price for the 3D deluxe set, whether you have 3D or not (which I don't). Isn't it enough that we've already paid money to sit through what has to be one of my worst ever cinema experiences (visually incredible, but I do wish I'd brought some earplugs). I'm still waiting for the UK Blu-ray release to see if the 'Cretaceous Cut' is even available here, as there is a real lack of details on what extras are on the UK release, and even then I might leave it until the price comes down.

reply

I saw it in my local HMV today. There are three UK releases: DVD; Blu-Ray; and Blu-Ray 3D.
Only the 3D has the label "Cretaceous cut" but it does say it is both 2D and 3D.
I wanted to check if it was what we were all hoping for, the film without the fools soundtrack. So is it confirmed this is not just the film in mute, but has sound and music without the voices?

Otherwise I will just get the DVD release and play it muted in-tandem with a CD of the tv series music.

I bought the 3D Blu-Ray, which comes with just the one disc and it plays beautifully on my 2D Blu-Ray player (I don't have any 3D setup).

The Cretaceous Cut is far superior, but still has moments that were obviously edited to fit the annoying script, which just seem awkward without the dialogue to tell us why these stupid moments are occurring in the film. For example, they poke fun at the Gorgosaurus with several close up shots of the small arms(which I guess you could argue is meant to teach your kids to make fun of those with limb disabilities), and a bit where they rewind the film (which also wasn't even funny). Karl Urban has also been removed along with the end credits. There is not a single voice in the film (not even to introduce the dinosaurs when they appear), and without a single human to be heard you can finally hear the great creature sound effects along with the music and songs. I loved this version, and wished I could have seen [and HEARD] it when I paid money at the cinema.

Unfortunately, because it is only on the 3D release, that means it is more expensive, but I managed to get a reasonable price on eBay.

From what I can tell from your description is that it's simply the same movie minus the voices.

Surely that must be an improvement. I figured the plot was simple enough to understand with the sound turned off. Still, the movie centers on dinosaurs going on adventures, falling in love, forming sibling rivalries and betraying each other. Those antropomorphic traits can't be erased by taking out the voices.

First i've heard of this Creataceous cut. sounds better but they should just drop the voices altogether on ALL dvd, blu ray and any future showings on tv cable etc so nobody has to listen to it again.

Even get Kenneth Brannagh to narrate it.

reply

The ONLY way to watch this film!!

Geez, I had to turn off that annoying, jabbering dialogue after about 20 minutes.

Thankfully I had an alternative!

reply

First i've heard of this too and it has to be better than the awful dialogue version. problem is though the good name of WWD has been tarnished and there's still plenty of awful dialogue dvds out there.

There should be an amnesty so anyone who has them can get them burned for free so nobody else throughout the rest of time associates the great BBC series with said awful dialogue version.
