Bet this movie makes a LOT of money!

The ONLY way Hollywood studios assess whether a movie is good or not is by the box office receipts minus the budget. Seeing as how this movie was only about 1.5 million to make, this will be the biggest earner for CBS for a long, long time. I can't wait to see it and I hope that it makes Aubrey the go-to girl for a lot more in the future.

It's only releasing in 591 theaters opening weekend. That's not enough to make a splash.

It's budget is only 1.5 mill
it will be insanely financially successful even with a low turnout

With such a low theater count (and the lack of buzz behind it), being "insanely financially successful" isn't very likely. With the theater's cut in mind, the movie will need to make about $2.7mil just to break even, and that's not with the advertising costs included (which surely cost a few million). While breaking even (and maybe a little more) is possible, it's not going to be a runaway success.

That would never happen. This just doesn't have THAT wide of appeal. I predicted 1.33 Million for the entire weekend. Will be impressed if it can do 2 Million. Don't get me wrong, I really want to see it and hope it does well, but it doesn't look like a hit at all.

Lack of buzz? You must not be seeing the same twitter feeds and postings of the trailer I am seeing. Anyone who really loves comedies and the Judd Apatow universe knows this movie is out and will be seeing it. And for the Parks and Recreation fans who might not even know of Aubrey from Scott Pilgrim and Funny People and Safety Not Guaranteed this will be one movie they will be sure to see just because it's Aubrey freakin' Plaza! I can't even guess how much it will make, but I bet that after it shows success at those theaters this week, it will expand into more next weekend, after the "on the street" buzz hits. I'm looking forward to seeing it not only for Aubrey, but the rest of the cast. The guest cast looks like a smorgasbord of comedy genius!

I hope you are right. The tv commercials were playing during the week on MTV.
I think people know this movie coming out, but unfortunately it might not be playing at a theater near you. I believe this a movie that benefits by not having too many commercials or exposure. I believe way too many movies beat funny parts and lines to death by their overexposure.

reply

I think it has the potential to do well, and I hope it does.

Only thing that worries me is the low theater count.

^ Meh... doesn't sound actually that *good*, though.

Which is kind of a problem, lol.

i'm surprised it had such a small budget given the abundance of known talent in the cast. Did most take a smaller salary to ensure casting the ensemble or am I out of touch with how much B/C list actors get paid?

reply

The director is Bill Hader's wife and the cast is largely people from the SNL/NBC sitcom scene. All these people are friends (a la Apatow/Sandler), making it seem more like a weekend project than a business effort. If I had to guess, that's what kept the budget low.

I'm pretty sure this was filmed about two years ago, too. Some of the cast (especially Aubrey Plaza and Donald Glover) weren't the names they are now.

they wouldn't bring this film anywhere near my area. i was upset because I have been anticipating this.

reply

Well it only made $590,000 on friday

It's not a Hollywood studio release, so the filmmakers need not worry.

If they're hoping for spectacular buzz to launch or skyrocket a whole bunch of careers, though, they may be disappointed based on the film's take as of Mon. 8/5. Its per-screen average was pretty dismal in its second weekend of release, and it seems like the total screen count is dropping, not rising.

I loved Aubrey Plaza in SAFETY NOT GUARANTEED, and I wish she would do more character-driven comedies like that one. The fact that she seems to want to be thought of as an overgrown adolescent and on-stage prankster doesn't fill me with hope, in spite of her obvious talent.

The movie cost $1.5 mil and has brought in $3.3 mil
It didn't lose money and it didn't make money.
With rentals and VOD, etc.

This film should see a nice $75 profit (no thats not a type-o SEVENTY FIVE)

I thought this flick was quite hilarious, but it's bleeding red ink and will probably never, ever reach profit. Theaters do not show films for free and marketing is EXPENSIVE. Even though CBS decided last minute to dump this, the marketing spend was well beyond the small budget. It's per theater average and weekly drops were as awful as it gets. Too bad. This deserved a larger audience.

lol not so much. Don't get into the entertainment business ok? You'd suck at it.

So in your opinion, kids need to learn what indie movies are, thus this movie tanking isn't this movie's fault? LOL. This movie was like an American Pie rehash, only it was a girl trying to get laid. Nothing more. And people do not need to adapt their tastes to yours. Indie movies that are very well made, tend to do very well and find a very large audience. Clerks and Winter's Bone come to mind. This movie is nowhere on that level. Judging by your view, seems everyone should just like a movie, simply because it's an indie movie. Not how it works. And of note, I'm a big fan of both Connie Britton and Rachael Bilson, so I had high hopes for this film.

reply

Didn't Kevin Smith say that Clerks started making money around the 10th anniversary?
Sadly most good indie films don't use to do well. Which one is the last sleeper hit you know about? I have to go back to the 90s, Full Monty or something around that time. I can't think of anything from the last decade right now. All hits have been put out by big corporations and use to be bad movies. Sure there must be some indie hit, but I can't give you a title. I can give you plenty titles pre 90s.
