Gross, Not Funny, Poorly Written - but I love Aubrey Plaza

Yeah, I was disappointed by this movie. I didn't think it made much sense. The degree to which she was ignorant of some of the stuff was unrealistic. Also, just all of the dialogue was just awkward and poorly written. And it wasn't funny. It was just really gross minus any funniness. and her mom was ridiculous. Her fighting with her sister all the time was annoying. It just wasn't good.

And another big problem is that I just...didn't...care. Johnny Simmon's character (who will forever be Young Neil to me) was the only likeable-ish character in the movie, and Connie Britton as the mom wasn't bad, but everyone else pretty much sucked, including our main character. We get NO time to really get to know her before the plot is rushed in even before the 10 minute mark, and then it's mostly a serious of vulgar jokes being spouted off by one-note stereotypes of the "slutty" girl friends (or at least I suppose so, the movie never really defined what those two were supposed to be about) and the "horny" dude friends that, again, it's impossible to give two *beep* about one way or another. None of it feels real or genuine; it just feels forced and artificial.

It's not like I have any kind of problem with this type of humor, not at all, one of my favorite comedies is Porky's, FFS. And I actually do have some appreciation for the overall premise, but again, I just didn't care enough about these flat characters to be able to laugh with them in these situations and truly feel anything from any of them like the film clearly wanted me to. Even in sex comedies you need at least SOMEWHAT realistic characters, especially in a coming-of-age one like this. I just didn't get enough of that here, the ending just kinda feels tacked on and, just like the beginning, rushed.

This either needed to have better characters that acted more realistically, or just go full on Porky's and be 90 minutes of pure silliness. Trying to combine the two just didn't work here. I had a few chuckles here and there, and I've missed seeing Sarah Steele on screen (too bad it had to be in something like this), but yeah, this is just a bad, forgettable movie that earned its low rating and box office.

How was it unrealistic? She didn't have the Internet to get all of her info from, simply whatever she got from friends or television. A mega nerd like that wouldn't know the first thing about any of that stuff, and considering she didn't utter a single curse word until the end of the movie I'd assume that if her friends started talking about stuff in front of her she'd just tell them to stop. She didn't act like she didn't know what a blowjob was, but things like rimjobs, etc. make sense to not know what they are if you aren't exposed to anything like that.
