This is probably obvious but am I right in thinking after 3 years apart they met up again and realised they didnt love each other anymore? Then thats why they were picturing scenes from the past in there minds to try and remind themselves what it used to be like and bring the emotion back but it wasnt happening?

You're basically right. They didn't love each other enough at the end to give up their lives. Jacob said he would have to start over making furniture if he moved to London, since he had built such a big market in Los Angeles for his designs already. And Anna presumably gave up her Junior Editor promotion and was looking in Los Angeles for jobs, but she didn't like what was available. This is blatantly shown in the scene right before the shower scene.
