The whole movie is just a cautionary tale, really, for stupid kids who ignore real-life rules because they're oh-so-in-love. I'm so annoyed at the main characters for their foolishness - and I don't just mean the visa thing, of course. If they hadn't ignored the rules, she would have gone back after two months and their relationship would have developed naturally - it might or might not have worked out. Instead, what they got was a romanticised/idolised version of their first few months together which grew and grew in their heads in the way that unsatisfied desires do, without any basis on reality. They ended up hurting the people around them and each other and there's absolutely no guarantee that what they got was a happy ending, they might as well find out they hate each other after a few months. Stupid stupid kids!
Btw, RIP Anton Yelchin. When I heard of his death I remembered that this movie kept coming up on my Netflix suggestions, which is why I watched it today. He was a fine actor and his death is a tragic loss. I hope he will be forever remembered.
