So he couldn't move to London?

Because he didn't want to quit his job?
But she could becasue it is A-ok for her?

I don't get it. He could've gone there and spared us 2 hours of our lives on this piece of crap movie.

Well he had his own company, she on the other hand could just find someone else to work with

You make a great point, atalanta88. The fact that he had his own business should have made that easier than leaving a job. His excuse was essentially that moving would be a bother. As someone who did move to Europe for love I can say that there is a lot to recommend it. London is also a particularly nice city. I think that Americans tend to think that of course everyone would rather live in the US. He should at least have tried London for a year or so. If the relationship was not worth that little to him then she would have been much better off with Simon.

reply

He'd need a visa to live and work (even self-employed) in London. It's not that easy, and there's no immigration category that he would have qualified for - unless they were to marry. His only other option would be to go as a tourist.

reply

But they did marry, so wtf was the problem? he should've at least tried. this bothered me through the whole movie.

reply

She couldn't have been better off with Simon, she didn't love him, it was clear.

Maybe I'm the only one who feels this way, but I sort of thought the fact that the whole problem started when Anna blew off her initial visa expiration, even though Jacob tried to talk her out of it, was why Jacob shouldn't have been expected to move to London.

In my opinion Jacob was the more mature of the two in that regard, and I think maybe in his mind, he shouldn't be the one to have to move when it was Anna's mistake that put them in the predicament they found themselves in.

A relationship is a ridiculous reason to drop everything and move, especially for a couple of kids who can't be faithful to each other. I see people do this all the time and then when they break-up one has to start his/her life all over again.

reply

It may well be a ridiculous reason to drop everything. I know I couldn't have done it for my husband, no matter how much I love him. I did not want to live in the US, away from my family. I'm just super-grateful that he did it for me instead. It is true that if we ever break up, he may have to 'start his life all over again' if he moves back to the States, but he's made a life for himself here and won't ever need to.

I think that's the key to making a move to a different country successful; don't do it for love, do it because you want the new life.

Wow, I really couldn't disagree more. I on the other hand can't understand why anyone would prioritize their country and relatives over the love of their life, the mother/father of their children, the person you would grow old and die with.
I mean US vs UK is like choosing a porsche or a ferrari. I can understand it being a bit more difficult a decision if the person is asking you to move to uganda to be a street cleaner.
But to each their own.

In reality, she'd not have been banned for overstaying her visa, either... We've got some 20 million illegals in this country to prove that doesn't work, if it did, then why are they still here.???

Yeah, I do not understand why they did not get married before she left to go back to the UK. They seemed so much in love, so I do not understand why they did not get married (so that she did not have to leave him). And if they were really that much in love, than why did they cheat on each other (or did they break up for awhile)? He started seeing that girl that worked for him, and she started seeing the guy that lived in her building. It seemed like they were really in love, but their actions did not show it very well.

Anna's mistake was not in overstaying her visa. Her mistake was going back to London and then trying to re-enter the USA. Any fool would know that once you leave in those conditions you cannot come back. If she had simply overstayed her visa & lived in America she would have been fine. Donald Trump aside, the majority of illegal aliens in America are not from Central & South America - they are people who overstayed their visa & never left.

Not sure how everyone feels, but moving city is a big deal, moving country can be a HUGE deal for some people at least. Its a gamble to just move that for just for a girl, maybe if they were together in a steady relationship for a period of time they could have worked something out, but when you have you own business and living in the city you love, its a big deal for a lot of people to suddenly get up and move to London.

Had you paid attention to the dialogue in this piece of crap movie, Jacob explains the reason the first time he visits London. He didn't feel at home in London. He said he felt like he was on vacation, and that he didn't fit into her life there. Also, the movie was only 90 minutes long, which leads me to believe it took you just under 30 minutes to write your critical little haiku there. Maybe the problem is not the movie, but how you manage your time. Just sayin'.
