She was pregnant right?

I mean she wasn't drinking anymore, she wanted to just soak in the shower, she was looking in the mirror just before that and it looked like she was going to get sick (morning sickness?)

Am I alone here?

Haha, i was just about to make the exact same post.

My wife and i both agreed that she was obviously pregnant. That was a no-brainer.

However I have mentioned it elsewhere on the web, and people seem to disagree.

I'm with you 100%, though. She was pregnant. I actually think that is probably
the deal-breaker in their relationship. She has to tell him, and he'll be
done with her completely.

"Tide's up. Time to stay alive...."

reply

No, she was not.

reply

This is a "no-brainer" in the sense that people who think this have no brains. There is nothing to suggest that she was pregnant.

reply

No she wasn't....Simon had her cut back on her drinking since he is a fitness trainer and he has her trying to live healthier. She accepted and drank the whiskey offered by Jacob.

reply

I dunno guys... There's a scene right near the end where she's in the bathroom
looking in the mirror at herself, it seems obvious to me she had just
gotten done throwing up in the toilet....

I think she was in the process of realizing she was knocked up.

"Tide's up. Time to stay alive...."

reply

I think that's reaching a bit too far. It'd be a crazy twist to end it, but I really don't think the intention was to end the film with a pregnancy. Her looking in the mirror was more a symbol of her examining herself, and not being fully sure why she left everything. The ending was brilliant, in a sense.

When she was at dinner with Simon and her parents and she didn't want to drink and I thought it would come out that she was pregnant but when they went on to talk about waking up a 6am to go running I think would could assume that that was all it was..a diet/fitness.

I thought she was going to be sick too and made me thing back to the possibility that she could be pregnant but I think she was overwhelmed and she was beginning to realize that maybe this relationship wasn't meant to be.

There are hints earlier in the movie that pregnancy might be the closer. Look at how the parents carried on about doing things in an "adult" manner for instance. There's also a scene which follows later in the film where Simon and her go at hot and heavy. Namely the panties are out the door and he's plowing away.

Also that was not a "I'm into fitness" type of reaction toward being presented with some alcohol. She could have very easily just drank it all if she was not pregnant, but instead she splashed down a sip and looked to sheepishly regret it.

reply

I say… yes she was pregnant.

First hint: her mom said you are glowing (that is a signifier for pregnant)
Second: When she is in the bathroom and almost pukes.

I really wanted them to stay together but I feel like the end really alludes to the fact that she is pregnant and they will not work out now. Someone mentioned that he bought the flowers and whisky just as he did the first time he went to pick her up from the airport. Jacob wanted to recreate the magic from that first time but in the shower they both realized that this could not happen. They would not be able to go back to those days hence them crying and letting each other go.

reply

I think that instead of "almost" puking, she actually made herself puke to get rid of the alcohol so it wouldn't hurt the baby.

"They only mock that which they don't understand."

reply

How did you come up with the conclusion of her being pregnant because of her glow. Other things had happened right before that comment. She'd just found out that the ban was lifted and she had just gotten promoted at work. It couldve been a glow of love. Also she was drinking quite alot of wine during dinner with her parents. The reason everything seemed so awkward between them at the end was because that inital spark they had and continued to have over the 3 years of being together was just no longer there. I think the conclusion you guys have given the storyline is farfetched.

& so the lion fell in love with the lamb. What a stupid lamb. What a sick, masochistic lion.

reply

I'm glad to know I wasn't the only one who thought she was pregnant esp when her mom made the glowing comment. I loved this movie! I thought it was realistic

reply

It was left ambiguous for a reason. The glowing comment and the gag in the bathroom suggest pregnancy, but nothing was concrete. Like most indi movies, it's ending is kind of up to the interpretation of the viewer.

For the record, when I saw it, my mind jumped to pregnancy.

I could be wrong now....but i don't think so!

reply

I hate it when movies do this. I get why they do, it, but damn, every time I have to make up my own mind about someone's death, pregnancy, break-up, etc.

reply

I don't think so. I think her refusing whiskey, the look in the mirror and the scene in the shower were all meant to display how much Anna and Jacob and grown apart.

reply

She was not pregnant.

The whole point about the alcohol is that Simon is a control freak who does not Anna have the fun she once did.

And the whole point of the ending and the shower seen is to show the extent to which all the events, tension, barriers and troubles of the past have ground them down to nothing.

The end song is "dead hearts" , the process of visas, time differences and flights have taken there young, naive, spontaneous, trouble free, hearts ( with "lights inside their eyes" and ground them into older, wiser, more cautious beings that don't even recognize each other any more...

She's not pregnant, this is so silly lol

((though it's an interesting theory))

I guess some people want their imagination conclude the movie :) so let them say that Anna was pregnant :) even though it wasnt the director's intended scenario.

If she was preggo, it would be Simon's child, I guess.

I agree with this. The Stars song was perfect for the ending.

The ending is still left open, however, in that we don't know if Anna and Jacob will try to renew their love or will simply give up. To me it seems like they will give up because they don't seem to have the maturity to work through relationship problems. They are both far too impatient and clueless as to how real relationships work.

Most people want the 'honeymoon phase' to last forever not realizing that it takes love and patience to keep a relationship strong. People today seem to want instant fixes so they continually change partners hoping the next one will be the 'perfect' one. Lasting relationships require that both partners be willing to communicate and work on their problems--if they really love each other, of course.

Saw this topic a few months ago, just listened to the audio commentary. She wasnt meant to be pregnant, they mentioned that some people have thought that and how suprising it was for them to hear that. It wasn't intended.

reply

It says in the director's commentary that she wasn't pregnant. They said she just looked like she was going to be sick because of anxiety or whatever.

I thought the same thing though, a lot of people did!

reply

"They said she just looked like she was going to be sick because of anxiety or whatever."

I can believe that. If you go back to the wedding scene, she also looked anxious and almost sick right before she got married.

I think a lot of scenes were meant to show that the characters were grappling with making the right choices--are they choosing things before it's meant to be or because it's what they think they should do.
