The Weighted Average Makes No Sense

Approximately 75% of voters (410 or 544) ranked this movie as a 7, 8, 9 or 10, and nearly 40% gave it a 10. So how does IMDb calculate it's overall rating at 5.8? That seems disproportionately low, even for a weighted average.

I don't think IMDB's alogrithm is public information. If it were, it would be just that much easier to game. But given that caveat, my understanding is that people who have been around longer and those who have voted on more movies get higher weightings. I also wouldn't be surprised if all the 1-votes and all the 10-votes were just thrown out.

While I don't think that they just throw out the 1-votes and 10-votes, DaliParton is right. IMDb's algorithm is not public information. And the assumptions are most likely correct that the users who have rated the most number of titles have their votes count more.

In a movie like this, I'm guessing that most of the 10-votes are by people who have rated only this title - they are not even going to come close to affecting the average compared to users who have seen thousands of movies.
The top 1000 voters has a 4.0 arithmetic mean and a 3.9 weighted average - those voters have their votes count the most and that's what brings down the overall weighted average.
