Come back for Val?

hope this puts him back in the lime light where he belongs. He's a terrific actor. Felon showed he still has it. Nuff said

There is a possibility, but considering "Tetro"'s reception, I don't think Coppola's mainstream anymore.

Old thread is old, but

but if he doesn't care, why should anybody else?
dang, that's a sad state of mind for an artist.

reply

that's a sad state of mind for an artist.

To care more about their creative autonomy than their financial success? I think you'll find that's more or less the definition of an artist. If selling is your priority, you're being dishonest with your art.

reply

I'm not sure how this turned into a commentary on money. But, swap "selling" for "self-gratification" and I'll agree with that last sentence.

reply

You want me to come back for Val? I'll come back, assuming this is a comeback.

reply

I concur, moreover making low budget films is more fun and self rewarding. After all those years of mainstream, I think he deserves it.

reply

If he wants to make home movies, let him. But to inflict something like Twixt on an unsuspecting public? That is a crime.

reply

I was not as appalled by this as you were. And I can see why some people wouldn't like it. But the trailer pretty much made it clear what you were getting yourself into.

reply

I didn't see a trailer. I saw a movie on Netflix that seemed like it was made by professionals. It is laughably awful.

reply

It all depends on the subject matter...

Most Val Kilmer movies have international DVD releases and make money.

But these movies all promise action and/or crime. They profit from that and Kilmer being the lead.

I thought Val Kilmer was good in Felon and Columbus Day and is still a worthy actor when they do the right film for him.

The other poster clearly explained the FFC situation at the moment.

Now we have Kilmer in a serious drama. The movie that made his reputation was the Dramatic Jim Morrison Bio-pic.

What I think it will do, is allow Kilmer to be rediscover by a more intellectual crowd again.

It will also allow FFC to have a film more widely distributed because of Val's presence.

Finally this movie, if well made, could allow them a bigger then usual success.

So yes it could definitely start the cultivation of a road to a comeback for both of them, but I would still be surprised if they came back in the A List because of this film.

reply

It has Joanne Whalley in it was well. Ha ha ha...

reply

I hope it does succeed, and they do come back to the A-List. Val has the talent

reply

Val Kilmer is an amazing actor...

reply

He makes movies he want... period.

Last Movies: - Season of the Witch: 3/5
- Tron: Legacy: 4/5
- Little Fockers: 3,5/5

I think Coppola never was A-list. Sure, Godfather. One might argue that.

But Godfather two was a far bleaker picture. It was well acclaimed, but not your Hollywood-mainstream-film.
Apocalypse Now! was HATED when it came out! It almost destroyed his rep. And it ate all the studio's money (and if you think the Redux is an indication of the film, look for the 5 hour workprint!!).

Conversation. Not a typical A-list film.

Dracula! Rainmaker! One From the Heart! Stone Gardens! All not typical Hollywood fluff.

Coppola has always been a director who does what he wants, who has sort of an agenda and just goes with it.

So yeah, he will never EVER be an A-lister to me. He is one of the few directors who need to either land something akin to Scorsese's Gangs of New York (a huge epic that will re-introduce actors to the arthouse crowd, regarded as failure first and then years later as a masterpiece) or who will only be regarded as the master he is once he has stopped working.

I really don't see this as much of a comeback for Val as it is for Bruce Dern.

reply

Val Kilmer's real comeback will be when he eventually makes his passion project about Mark Twain. That's why he's saying 'yes' to all the acting roles he can get right now: he's saving up to direct and star in a Mark Twain movie. There's video footage of his Twain act on Youtube if anyone doubts he can do it.

reply

Why do people think actors (like Kilmer) doing all the small DVD stuff need to make a comeback? He probably makes more money doing those small films than a couple big ones. They don't take as long to make, he doesn't have to fly around everywhere doing publicity for them, it's just easy money.

reply

More a comeback for Coppola.

Its that man again!!

reply

But NOT BIG money and attention, I personally don't think Val is the shallow type, but I bet he probably misses being in the spotlight once more, even the most serious actors can fancy eating in great restaurants, get to work out with expensive instructors and gain and lose 50 pounds in half a year, learning karate, parachuting, and other A-list action flick stuff. And all the chicks going crazy for him???? that doesn't hurt, right?

Look at his "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang" co-star: Robert Downey Jr.
He was always regarded as a great serious actor, but never really recognized as an A-lister until he starred in Iron Man, now everybody talks about him, and he seems to like that for a change, plus being in a positive socioeconomic environment probably helped him to keep his well-known demons at bay.
Even female A-listers, who usually have it far harder than men, cope well with celebrity, plus being famous and starring in pop-corn flicks will definitely allow you to find financing for your more serious projects. Look at Spielberg, he is like the forefather of today's decaying pop-corn crap cinema, and he even produces it, yet he finds time to do kinda serious works as well.

now this is acting: http://www.imdb.com/media/rm2458172160/tt1528718

reply

I hope so! I'm just too excited for his comeback.

I'm your huckleberry...

reply

Kilmer is indeed a talented actor, but what the hell happened to his face? Both he and Alec Baldwin look like they're having a face-inflating contest. Cosmetic surgery gone wrong?

reply

No. They just put on weight. It happens. Baldwin looks better for it. Val doesn't.

reply

Horrible movie (WTF, Coppola actually directed this?) but Val Kilmer is, and will always be, a good actor. Too bad he's always in *beep* movies nowadays, but one can't blame him for working with Coppola even though it's a bad movie.

reply

At least we got to see Father Guido Sarducci.
