Doesn't mean no disrespect but...

I can't believe this is from the same Coppola that brought us The Godfather and Apocalypse Now.

What happened to you Mr. Coppola?

reply

I was unaware this was a Coppola film until the closing credits. When it came up saying 'Written and Directed by Francis Ford Coppola' I cried out "WHAAATT!!!??" in shear disbelief.

reply

I'm always under impression that an actor/actress has their own declining stage at a certain time, but a director is like wine and will only get better as time goes by. Not to mention a director as complex and conceptual as Coppola.

So yeah, it's hard to believe just like a career suicide for Coppola.

reply

Interesting metaphor...Coppola is far mre succesful as a winemaker than filmmaker these days!

The same Coppola that brought us The Godfather and Apocalypse Now is the same Coppola that brought us Dementia 13, You're a Big Boy Now, Finian's Rainbow, The Outsiders, Tucker: The Man and His Dream and Jack. Directors are multi-faceted. Coppola more so than most.

Twixt was an experiment. The experiment didn't work. C'est la vie.

Exactly what I was thinking.

Yes! Thank you!

This is more like the Francis Ford Coppola that made Jack....

Unfortunately Coppola's life and career went sour in the 80s. On a personal level the tragic death of his son Gio in 86 had a huge impact on him and blunted his desire for a long time to make movies I think.

He also got himself into huge, crippling debt trying to establish American Zoetrope which later led to him taking on stuff like The Cotton Club, Peggy Sue Got Married, Godfather 3, Dracula, Jack and The Rainmaker. He basically did most of those movies as a hired hand and because they were commercial projects such was his need to make money.

It seems clear that upon returning to film making he has rejected mainstream cinema and is making the movies he wants to however while I have yet to see Twixt I did not enjoy YWY or Tetro. I think he is almost done making movies, its a shame the way his career has gone he could have been one of the all time greats.

...he could have been one of the all time greats.

I get what you're saying, but just for "Godfather" I and II and "Apocalypse Now," I think he deserves a place in the conversation. Certainly among the modern American greats, at least - think Kubrick, Scorsese, Lynch, etc.

reply

Absolutely right he IS one of the modern greats but what I meant was that he could have done so much more had things worked out differently. No filmmaker matched his 70s output but post Rumble Fish and The Outsiders he has had a frustrating, unsatisfying career but then I kinda feel that about Scorsese for the past 20 years.

Film making to Coppola now is kinda like a hobby I think.

It smells like a Spin Doctors concert in here.

reply

I enjoyed Tetro, but that one was an anomaly. His last truly succesful film was, imho, Dracula.

Naw, "The Rainmaker" (1997) is worthy and did okay at the box office. The problem was that "The Firm" (1993) -- a previous John Grisham-based film -- grossed six times as much.

He still is one of the all time greats and always will be in the history of films and Hollywood. I just don't get most of the negative remarks on judging Coppola for this film or others like Tetro. So they don't live up to the "Godfather", that was a different time and different Coppola. What he went through from the making of "Apocalypse Now" and losses of both son, studio, wealth, etc was what kind of broke him. I really wonder what kind of effect it would have on any of the people whom come here and judge him and put downs on a film director that is out way out your league to comprehend his life and challenges.
Please while we are on critical rants here, lets try and also examine the films of "Martin Scorsese" has made in the last two decades that were mostly studio commercials movies, you don't see him making films like "Taxi Driver" or "Raging Bull"or even "Goodfellas", instead he is done crap like "Aviator", "Shutter Island" and "Hugo". If you ever watched any of Coppola's interviews he often talked about that what he really wanted from the beginning of his career was to make personal films, but those are films like Tetro, Youth for Youth and Twixt that are not suppose to be commercial success and maybe not for the average audience. I am glad Coppola is still has the passion to even make films, no matter how bad it comes off because it fails people's expectations but the point is that he is still creating.

reply

I don't think it is as bad as everyone else did. Even though it was Coppola I still kept my expectations low as that is how horror works.

It had some goofiness which again..horror...it had some dorkiness...horror...

But the production value was pretty good and the acting was fine. Better than some independents where you want to kill yourself half way through because of the horrid acting.

I would rather sit through this than that annoying BWP.
