I thought that as well but still quite enjoyed it and the ending was good which I wasn't expecting as usually this genre of film has a lame ending.

yeah, i thought that too. Well, not exactly zombies, but i was pretty disappointed when i realised they weren't paranormal or non-human at all. And the whole plot seemed a little too "small" for a feature length film - even one that only went for 1.5 hours.

shareI assumed zombies as well, and as time went on I wondered if zombies were gonna show up during the ringing bell trap and then during the siege. But with lines of dialogue they did establish a bit of lore to help explain the cannibalism.
"You two are on trap duty"
"Its a waste of time"
"No its not"
"I havent even heard a bird chirp in over two years"
So we can assume that animals are extremely rare or maybe even absent at this point. So some event lead to animal extinction (maybe even human extinction but some people were immune to whatever it was) and society collapsed.
