theories on apocalyptic event?

Anyone have theories on what the cataclysmic event might have been to cause society to break like this?
I'm thinking something happened that poisoned most animal life on the planet (except human life, of course). Lack of meat sources would drive some people to hunt humans, and since there's safety in numbers, like-minded people would probably naturally form sects.
I remember one part of the movie where I think it's Ashley Bell who says they haven't heard a bird chirp in ages, which is why I'm thinking no animals....
What do you think?

The script began as a zombie flick and it evolved. Sometimes it's possible to overthink these things.

Yeah, don't try to think while watching trash like this, it ruins the movie,

I like when movies don't explain what broke the world.

Apparently, it was a disaster that made human beings forget both agriculture and that there are a number of vegetable-based protein sources. That would explain why cannibalism, among the least nutritious of diets, moved into the Number 1 spot.

Bad films are a crime against humanity.

Im thinking what killed the animals also must have made our main source of food crops hard to grow. This would neatly tie up a ribbon of explanation for the cannibalism and also why the leader wanted to find a perfect spot to grow his seeds, not just a safe place from the cannibal groups but also a hearty enough place for the crops to survive.
