WHY?

Why is Franco doing this? He is a great actor, but he has nothing to do with directing and writing.

Straight Edge is the only way to be free.

Actually he has his MFA in filmmaking from NYU. The Broken Tower isn't his first film to direct. He's also done Fools Gold, The Ape, Good Time Max and the documentary Saturday Night, as well as numerous short films. So actors shouldn't try their hand at directing? What about Robert Redford, Kevin Costner and Mel Gibson? Not only did they direct successful films, they won Oscars! BTW, Ben Affleck is a damn good director too. I've never thought much of him as an actor, but watch Gone Baby Gone!

Not that the OP's ridiculous post even needs to be dignified with argument/proof, but to add to the list of actors who became respected directors:

Clint Eastwood
Ron Howard
George Clooney
Ben Stiller

...and that's not even counting directors that less famously started off as actors, like Ron Howard, Penny Marshall, Rob Reiner, Peter Berg etc.

...or famous actors who haven't directed much, but their movies have been very well-received, like Robert DeNiro, Warren Beatty, etc.

I'm sure that there are many more names that can be added to these lists.

Also, some of the best directors strongly urge aspiring directors to take acting classes, because understanding the mind of an actor is crucial to being a good director. In that respect, actors already have an edge as compared to aspiring directors with no acting experience.
