My problem with Cadie...

Watching the show onward from episode 4 (Cadie's episode), something has continually bothered me about her portrayal of depression and anxiety. As someone who is diagnosed with the same, of course I don't expect Cadie to have the same experience as I have with this disorder. However, what bugs my mind is how she is able to party and have fun when she is suffering from anxiety? In general, when people suffer from anxiety, they are extremely uncomfortable in public settings, especially when crowded, and sometimes become introverted homebodies. We got to see a little bit of this in Cadie's episode, where she was a bit zoned out when she was going to Michelle's pool party...but that was it. If the disorder's effect on her was consistent in the show, I would be less inclined to call BS, but instead the only thing that seemed to "affect" her, was whether the boy she liked, liked her back.

Also, in Eura's episode, Stan mentioned that it was impossible to figure out there relationship b/c "whenever they were together, she wanted to kill herself". Why didn't we see when Cadie would have an depressed episode and snap around Stan? Or how it would affect him? I know that in Cadie's episode, she tried to sleep with the man out of spite, but it's not enough. This plot point is so inconsistent, I just want to give up on this show. Ugh.

I also get that Cadie was continually lying to herself about Stan's feelings for her (Chris' episode, her episode), but people with depression are usually very hard to deal with (especially in their teens), b/c they don't know how to express their feelings in a healthy way. If Cadie truly had depression truly had depression and anxiety she would do one or more of the following:

1. Continually question what Stan thinks of her.
2. Continually question what she needs to change or keep the same for Stan.
3. Suffer from distorted thinking (in which you believe EVERYTHING negative that has happened to you, you deserved it and you blame yourself for it)
4. Have emotional and mental reactions due to the combination of her anti-depressants and her abuse of pharmaceutical drugs.
5. Fall victim to some form of self-harm, whether it be physical or mental.
6. Have SOME sort of emotional breakdown, simply b/c she has depression. Sometimes, she just feels so emotionless.

I know I'm bitching to an extent, but Jesus, I CANNOT stand this part of the show. I can tolerate the bad acting, the poorly written lines, and the weird lip syncing, but I can't get past how incorrectly (or poorly) they portrayed a main character with an emotional/mental/mood disorder. I'm not going to even compare her to Cassie b/c they differ from what they suffer from (Cassie's being anorexia nervosa...and it was believable)...but I just thought I should throw that out there.

Note: How do the producers expect me to believe that Cadie would be the person who would help Stan let out his emotions, when they were barely portrayed outside their own episodes? Also, what kind of psychiatric unit allows candles and for you to take your own medication (if you saw her video diary)??? They pretty much take everything away from you when you're admitted...and you're only allowed to have things are deemed "safe" in your room...and you can't decorate. GRRRRR.

If you were able to get through this unbelievably long rant, I thank you. I don't mean to sound picky or dissatisfied, but I just had to express how I feel. I want this show to do well, b/c it has a lot of potential. But they need to get their facts straight. Don't hate me for it...or you can...it's okay either way. :)

I would put something witty here, but my mind is blank. So you get this instead:

well, i'm a teenage girl and i have an anxiety disorder, depression, hypochondria and OCD, and i go out every weekend, party and have fun, so i'm pretty sure everyone is different.

i do think they should show her more as anxiety/depression rather than just awkward. we don't really know whats wrong with her, and i agree i've never seen her snap at stanley the way he made it seem.

From what I remember I think she partied or engaged socially the least of the main cast (ex. her cooking by herself in the pilot, sitting by herslef at lunch listening to music, and generally not being present at many of the group's get togethers, but IDK I guess there are counter-arguments)

IDK I just feel like she's not as social as your post makes her seem, but otherwise from that I can't really argue much else as I'm not depressed, or know anyone personally who is???

I do agree that we don't really see her lose it as Stan says, but I think at the end of her centric episode she overdosed (though I would've liked that scene to be more obvious as I didn't realize she OD'd until Stan visited her in the clinic, the following episode) I guess that was to give us a bit of a hint

the part about asking Stab about approval/ what she should/not change is interesting though, I would've liked to see that on screen, perhaps next season (if there is one)

Well, I guess I can vouch for you because my girlfriend has bad, bad anxiety and the thought of a social situation scares her to death... But at the same time she is able to party and go out and drink and do drugs. I think it's just the situation. Cadie loves drugs so I guess that's why she's able to party. I think she's more depressed than she has anxiety, though.

Eh... I disagree. Like you said, everyone's experiences differ.
1. In regards to Stan, she knew she was bonkers and confused.
2. I think Cadie had a dissociative disorder. Although some people are really thoughtful when they have depression (like me) some aren't. Cadie just checked out in a similar way that Cassie did.
3. Good point, I don't know how she managed to stay balanced with all the drugs.
4. Not necessarily. Plus, drugs are often considered as a form of self-harm.
5. Again, I'm pretty sure she had a dissociative disorder.

No, I get where you're coming from. Just try to look past it if it bothers you.

Maybe she convinced them the candles were for religious purposes? lol
