I think Tony Hawk was from when Skateboarding first hit big in the 1980's. Danny Way is from a later era as far as I know.

Tony Hawk has always been more marketable from a mainstream standpoint. That's why a lot people who DON'T skateboard are familiar with him. He was basically Tiger Woods to people who don't follow golf.

Tony was also sponsored by the most popular team (Powell Peralta) for a large part of his career. So, while there were many really great skaters out there, most people knew Tony because he got the largest spotlight. Then X-Games happened and skateboarding really became mainstream, with Tony leading the way. Then video games, the 900 etc...

Danny Way STARTED with Powell Peralta but he didn't stick around, as you saw in the doc'. He ended up with H-Street who was MY favorite team during that time and then PlanB. They had a different approach to skateboarding that was more aggressive and street-based where Tony was primarily VERT based, which was more popular to, again, the mainstream. But people like myself who skated and were part of the culture at that time were well aware of both people.

So, it kind of started in the 80s but really SETTLED in the 90s. At that time, Tony had X-Games, Danny had his own path to pave that happened to be a bit more under the radar.

Unless you watch the X Games it is most people only know Tony Hawk from his fame with his video games if your not an avid watcher of the sport your not going to know most skaters. Bucky Lasek, Bob Burnquist, Andy McDonald, Rune Glifberg. I bet you won;t have heard of Rodney Mullen a very inspiring person. I guess if your not into the sport your not going to check out any other athletes.
