Did fairly well in box office outside USA, but..

... in USA The Little Prince did very poor.

What is the explanation? Bad marketing? With A-listers?

In the United States, the studio dropped it two weeks before its nationwide release in March. It was picked up by Netflix, and spent less than a week in theaters in August. The marketing was infinitesimal. The average American does not even know this film exists. Fans of the book were generally aware of it, but many were not pleased with the presentation and the framing story. Interestingly, there is now a very quiet, under-the-radar campaign (public radio ads) to give this film Academy Award consideration. It's being treated like an art-house film that most of the masses never saw.

For myself, I enjoyed The Little Prince and bought the DVD. It's not perfect and I understand the complaints of those who didn't like the third act, but I'm sure it's a movie I'll come back to many times in the years to come.

Wow, very informative answer.

I've found that bit about it being dropped by Paramount week before launch which I find perplexing.

Hopefully an Oscar nom will give it proper recognition and some additional cinema run it deserves.

Thanks!

On January 1st, Netflix actually subsidized a Little Prince float in the Tournament of Roses Parade that was seen by millions of people. I'm sure most of them said, "The Little Prince? Never heard of it!"
