Many of the songs were written for his voice, and his voice alone, they cast before they had finished the music, and the iconic bring him home was written days before the open night, it was for colm, do prefer Boe's voice but Colm is the first jvj and the one we will always remember

The fact is, they are all very talented singers, and amongst them, Colm was the greatest to me too (he hadn't lost his touch as we could see in the Encore !). But I used the past tence, since to me, compared to the others, even to Colm, Alfie Boe is far, far up in the stratosphere. I think that many of the people who are saying that Colm was a better Valjean are just letting their nostalgia or their "purism" talk. Alfie Boe rocks at every level, his voice, his acting, his charisma and presence, his astonishing class. In that show, his performance is quite simply overwhelming. In terms of singing, during the Encore, when the four Valjeans sang the wonderful Bring him home, it was clear that they were no match when Boe join the gang. It even made the people standing behind him smile, like "okay that one is a different kind of deal". :)

And let's not forget his face. Having read the book many times since my childhood, like many other books from Hugo (I'm from Paris, living 5 minutes from... Notre-Dame ^^), when I saw Boe's face for the first time, I thought : this is the face of Jean Valjean. At least, from a "french point of view". :)

Anyway, this is just my opinion, and again, Colm was wonderful in his time.
