Chorus in background

I'm not really into seeing them singing, especially with those annoying t-shirts.

reply

Bit harsh.

reply

I just wish there was a way they could dress them in period clothing, to keep with the era.

reply

Hmmm... I hear what you're saying. It didn't bother me at all, but I can see how it could.
Still, a pretty small complaint about a pretty awesome show :)

reply

You're right losty. Aside from that and Nick Jonas, it was a pretty awesome show.

reply

Yeah, poor 'Jonas-brother' as he's known at my place. (Didn't realise he had an actual name.)
Still, surely you can only blame the casting people, not Jonas himself. Considering his limitations, I thought he did well. It was just a truly bizarre choice to cast a pop singer in such a vocally and emotionally challenging (and well-loved) role.

It wasn't so out of place considering it is fairly common to cast /celebrities/ beyond their talent or experience, for their name recognition, ability to generate buzz and bring in extra audience. i.e....Daniel Radcliff...

And Jonas was active in Broadway stage as a youth, so he wasn't a total outsider.

It coulda been far worse. Jonas did far better than an R&B singer who was cast as Eponine when I saw Les Mis on Broadway (for the 3rd time). She sang really loud, and in such incongruous R&B style compared to the rest of the cast that audience actually chuckled... laughed, during the Eponine death scene, it was so bad.

What about Daniel Radcliffe? I've only ever seen or heard about him being in the Harry Potter movies.

Radcliffe aspires to be the next Matthew Broderick of Broadway. He did Equus last year.

Right now he's starring in his first musical theater role: 'How To Succeed In Business Without Trying' ... appropriately named IMO.

Here's a clip of his current stage exploits:

Hmm, interesting. I would have never guessed that Broadway would be his post-Potter endeavor. Is he fairly decent on Broadway, or no?

Is that the one in the 25th anniversary cd? She fancies it up a bit too and it bugs the hell outta me.

In theory that would be wonderful but in practicality with that many people running around backstage it would be utter chaos, there are hundreds of people on that stage.. Also it would be expensive.

reply

You know what would have been cheaper? not including the chorus. I found it pointless and distracting. It was one element I was hoping they would change since the last "dream case" concert.

reply

Wow. I completely disagree. I enjoyed the chorus (and their t-shirts) immensely. They added a lot, especially to Master of the House.

I can understand your thoughts on the t-shirts, although they didn't bother me. They were a French flag! Their presence also served to remind any noobs that it's a concert performance (and that they still need to see the actual show!)

Also, the chorus were all previous cast members. Over the years there have been a lot, and I guess it was a case of inviting as many old friends to the party as they could fit in.

And finally... they really added to the sound. You don't get a big choral sound like that with just the ensemble singing. They helped fill the acoustics of that vast building. Very much needed, imo.

reply

Very nicely worded. I agree!

reply

Thanks.

BTW, I heard that the chorus were only offered £1 (one pound) each for being there! I think there may have been some complaints to Equity about that, and they got a better deal in the end. Despite it being a "reunion party" for old Les Mis cast members, it was still a commercial venture for Sir Cameron - who doubtless did very well out of it - and their time and effort was surely worth more than one measly pound! What an insult to all those "old friends"!

reply

Well, I suppose "someone" figured that they were really volunteering, but that for legal reasons they had to be paid something/?
