Yeah, he was annoying. But also caring towards his friends, and someone with a passion for the life he had. Being severely disabled raises the possibility that his annoying nature is a expression of bitterness/anger towards his lot in life, and maybe it's worth cutting him some slack in that respect. I think he behaved like an arse a lot of the time but he also seemed capable and ready to admit when he had done so. To me that shows something else in his character other than the superficial selfishness.
