I don't mind Diane. I just don't know how this will compare to the 2006 movie. I found that movie to be amazingly stylish. It's a shame it's so underrated.

True, loved that version and I'm excited about this one. Any news?

Why was she replaced?
I don't want to say if Eva Green is better or Diane. I believe that Diane will be better in the role of Marie Antoinette than Kirsten Dunst was in the Coppola's movie. Both Kirsten Dunst and Coppola movie was a flop in my opinion. Dunst was even good as a teenage queen, but nothing more. Diane Kruger has the right look and maturity, and she is quite good actress. If the scipt is good and shows the queen as she really was, not just a spoiled woman it will be successful. The real Marie Antoinette was a very interesting, much more complicated and tragic woman.

I like Kruger but to even say her Marie Antoinette will be better than Kirsten Dunst one is pure madness.Plus Kirsten Dunst is a far superior actress and her portrayal of the woman(not the Queen)Marie Antoinette was just brilliant. And so it is the entire film.Kruger will be good but it will be a different portrayal since the film is inspired on the last days at the french court and not her entire existence brilliantly evoked by Coppola. The will not be her arrival at Versailles and what she faced as a young bride and lonely person that was Marie Antoinette. There is a massive difference between Marie Antoinette in her youth and the beloved Marie Antoinette in her tragic days shortly before the revolution erupted and after the fall of the monarchy.Something often forgotten by her fans and the people who don't know who she was.

Everyone is right to have own opinion and it's not a state of madness. The madness is when someone refuses others to express their opinions.;)

I'm sorry, I didn't like too much neither Kirsten Dunst as Marie Antoinette nor Coppola movie. Of course Dunst was brilliant in "Melancholia", Coppola is a quite good director. Dunst showed very young queen quite well, but I didn't buy her as the matured woman and queen, because she was still the same. And it's a difference between 15-year old girl and a woman 30 or 30+. I didn't see the difference in Dunst acting or her look.
Coppola's Marie Antoinette was one-dimensional. She was just focused on entertainment, shoes, fashion... I didn't like the end of the movie neither. The royal couple escapes from Versailles and it's the end. Someone who completely doesn't know who Marie Antoinette was and how tragic was her end could understand that they royal couple lived happy and long life. No wonder that this movie was very badly welcomed during Festival in Cannes. Besides modern music completely didn't suit to the story that had a place in 18 century.

I just hope that Kruger will be better in the role of the matured woman and queen.

Well, I disagree as well. The film was a stunning mood piece and Dunst portrayed the young queen's transition from immature teen angst to a savvy adult extremely smoothly. It's a breathtaking film that solidifies Coppola's genius and understanding of the human condition. I particularly loved her anachronisms that reflected MA's emotions and age, such as the music.

I respect your opinion even if mine is a different one. I rather noticed that people has divided opinion referred to this movie. So probably the truth lies in the middle of the road.
Anyway I'm very interested in "Farewell my queen" and hope that Diane Kruger will make the role in a right way. Marie Antoinette deserves it.

Kirsten was great in the Coppola movie, and Diane is great here. Different movies, different purposes. I think one thing people are overlooking is that Marie Antoinette was Austrian. Diane Kruger is German, and therefore has the right look. I didn't realize her French was that good though! Wow, perfect in French, German, and English...anything else?

reply

Kirsten Dunst is German too. Her father is from Hamburg and she holds German citizenship.

I bought this DVD only because of Diane.
" Farewell, My Queen " Wasn't supposed to be Marie Antoinette's story?
Well, she's only a supporting role, it disappointed me a little bit.
Since it mostly rely on Diane's publicity, and I like her.
Yes, she has similar background and descent
to play the role of Marie Antoinette.

reply

@stilla-766-679078, she was replaced because she was too busy with Dark Shadows to participate.

Drop it like it's legal precedent!

reply

Personally, I wish Lea Seydoux was playing Marie Antoinette. As much as I love Diane, Lea has a youthful beauty that I think is appropriate seeing as the queen was rather young when she died. Diane seems just a little too old for the role.

reply

I remember her from Woody Allen movie. She looked good but in fact I have never ssen her in another role her, so can't say if she is a good actress or not. I think that producers wanted someone more known in the movie.

Diane Kruger is in the right age - she is 36. Marie Antoinette died being 38 years old.
