i LOVE period pieces...and the french have alot of them...i find it is impossible to but a dvd of them in the states...if you buy them in europe of course you cant watch it because of the format!...rrrr SO MANY films i cant watch because i dont speak french...yes yes i know..LEARN FRENCH...ya well thats not going to happen anytime soon...anyone kow where is a good place to get torrents for forign films?
OH and the french never subtitle...lol..reminds me of the Louvre,...biggest friggin museume in the WORLD...and little description things that tell you what you are looking at............ya..only in french...not like millions of people come from all over the WORLD to see the museum...killls me because i live in Ann Arbor Michigan..very liberal..whatever..and in a parking structure i was in the other day had MANY translations ON HOW TO USE THE ELEVATOR!...they even had HINDU!..but noo the french cant be bothered...lol..i love/hate the french...sorry for the rant...but ya..anyone know where i might get some good forign period movies..PREFERABLE with subs..lol..thanx for reading..

Huh? Amazon & eBay are filled with French films with subtitles. As for the Louvre, ever been to the Smithsonian? English only, my friend. F...the rest of the world.

He meant French DVDs. French DVDs of French movies rarely have subtitles, other than the French subs for the hearing impaired. Of course, American DVDs of American movies have exactly the same problem; they assume that the viewer speaks the native language of the producing country.

Advice for the OP:
Get a region free, PAL converting DVD player. The Brits produce a wider variety of English-friendly DVDs of foreign language movies than the US distributors do. And, while it *is* uncommon, there are *some* French DVDs that include "sutitres anglais" (not to mention some French DVDs English language movies that nobody ever got around to releasing the US).

If they have any subtitles at all (i.e. French, Spanish, or Italian) I can usually follow them, but, I agree, I don't understand spoken French at all. Funny story about the Louvre, I once spent five minutes in the gift shop trying to communicate with a clerk in every language I know (French not being one of them, unfortunately). Finally the other clek (who was doing nothing at the time, but watching us) comes over and tells me in perfect English she doesn't speak English. I mean it's shocking somebody would come to a gift shop at an internationally famous museum and not speak French!

that is changing. French DVDs used to have no english subtitles, but I suspect that in order to make more money, a DVD too expensive to manufacture (i.e.: not worth it financially) in the UK etc can be exported from France if it has subtitles

Hinduism is the religion. People following it are called Hindu. Hindi is just the official language of India, not necessarily spoken by all Hindu.

Its only recently that brilliant english subs have been released for this one. Before it was those awful google translation ones.

You're so wrong. You should put the blame on American Majors who refuse to distribute french films because they think american don't like subtitles movies!! WHile in france most american movies are released..
It's not France's fault.

And..How Original! An english speaking person complaining that Paris isn't London. There are less people speaking other languages in the USA or UK than in france, BY FAR!!
I worked at the Louvres Museum and believe me they have Audio Guides in most langages. But it's true that we don't spamm the walls with all the languages of the world because we show respect to the masterpieces we have. The museum was created by the government to educate french people a coupe of centuries ago. It's not Dysneyland Paris!

And as surprising as it seems for americans, most tourists in Paris don't speak English!! DAMN, you american really think you own the world or what?? YOU're not the only ones on earth. Tourists in Paris are Japanese, Korean and Chinese... and more and more Spanish-speaking people.

What is "powerful tourists"? If you meant fatter and louder you're right but that not relevant to language...(kidding) but really I don't see your point, american tourists are not even the richest tourists in paris by far

Oh please! Canadians and Russians did all the hard work. The Americans were too fat and slow lol! But sure enough, when you finally caught up, you were and still are the loudest ones yelling "LOOK WHAT WE DID FOR YOU!"

My grandfather wasn't yelling "Look what we did for you." He died on D-Day, an American, fighting to liberate les francais.

But the French didn't really need American help, anyway. They had the impregnable Maginot Line to keep the Germans out!

While I agree with the general sentiment behind this post, it does seem a bit over the top in terms of chauvinism.

Take the statement "There are less people speaking other languages in the USA or UK than in france, BY FAR!!", for example. Is it correct?

The total population of France is about 66 million.
According to the US Census Bureau, in 2010 21% of the US population (or 61 million people) spoke a language other than English at home.

Interesting that you live in Ann Arbor because I do as well. The AAPL has a ton of French movies, all (as far I know) with English subtitles and in region 1 format.

You can also rent/stream a lot of French movies (with subtitles) on Netflix.

It's not that hard to get subtitled DVDs and if some French movies aren't popular enough to be released in the USA and UK than I can't blame the French for not going through the expense of subtitling their DVDS.

However, the obstinate French refusal to speak English is another matter. Educated people all over the world speak English (it's not technically my first language). Of course, I wouldn't expect people in rural France to speak English, but at the Louvre? Not only can you not communicate with "obnoxious" Americans and Brits, but you can't talk to ANYBODY that doesn't speak French. Like it or not a Saudi, an Hindi, a Swede, or a Latin American are all more likely to speak English than French. And learning English is a lot easier than learning all those other languages.

Also, even Americans are less monolingual than most Europeans think. I'd estimate 25 percent of Americans speak Spanish and in some places (New Orleans, northern Massachusettes) they speak French. But French is not THE international language and if it wasn't for the USA and the UK the main language in France would be GERMAN. Also, if the Louvre is only a FRENCH museum than they better give up the "Mona Lisa" and a bunch of other stuff they have there.

It’s part of a long term program to get rid of all these people that are invading us every year. We are not allowed to answer to any kind of questions coming from foreigners. No matter how much they insist. Sometimes it’s hard because we know a few words of English and we are tempted to use them…

And it works ! Paris is no longer the N°1 city to be visited by tourists in the world. London is. Thanks to the Olympic games. Glad we didn’t get the games.

But we have to be careful, they’re will be back !

PS : next time, try to say : Bonjour, vous parlez anglais ? It helps...

In Canada, the French and English get along just fine and most of us can speak the others language, even if just enough to get by. I don't get your anger, but then I have never been to the U.S. If you are looking for any French film that is subtitled in English try a .ca site when looking for French film.

What is it with Americans being illiterate? Beside many grammatical and punctuation errors, you've included numerous misspelled words. Connecting random phrases with ellipses is not how to write a paragraph, either. Capitalizing words to call attention to a point you are trying to make because you can't think of the right words is just plain lazy. Are you truly a product of the Ann Arbor school system? I thought that A.A. was a college town and assumed that literacy would be held in higher esteem? I would suggest night school for you, and quit posting comments until you learn how to use the language. At least proof-read before pressing the Post Reply button.
