Why supernatural elements?

As a period piece goes this was pretty darn good, possibly the best i've seen of this era...

But why on earth did they incorporate supernatural elements into the story (Johan)? There was absolutely no need for that and it destroyed the realism of the piece. I tried researching if anyone mentioned why and couldn't find anything.

Ole Bornedal considers himself an auteur and perhaps wanted to add other elements to his work of art than obvious agitprop.

But it's completely out of place. For example I have historian friends that I would LOVE to recommend this to, except there's fantasy elements that, IMO, chip away at the series' authenticity just on the face that there's elements of fantasy!

The series is not worth recommending in my opinion.

As a period piece, save the super natural elements it absolutely is.

The story is the story and trite and convoluted but as a representation of the Second Schleswig war is great to juxtapose against the american civil war (which is played out like zodiac signs on sweat shirts)
